So I registered WHOOHOO!! Tough Mudder here I come.. no longer a question of registration.
Ok last obstacle (and the electric eel part).. give it to me.. i know it hurts but does it make a difference between no shirt, tshirt, or long sleeve shirt? i want to feel the least amount of pain, I know there will be a lot, but a little less pain would be better! Figured clothes will be wet more than bare skin so i'm not sure if wetness make pain worse or no shirt makes pain worse
Is it one of those things where it hurts for a second or will i feel the pain for awhile?
PS this is NOT whining!!! This is curiosity and preparation, i am not breaking my pledge! I shall yell "thank you sir, may i have another"
Other tips welcome of course.

I did the Tough Mudder in 2011, and when it came to the shock therapy part... I didn't feel anything. Not a single shock. I don't know if they shut them off or something, but I didn't feel a thing.
I am doing it again this year, so I'll have to see if things change. My personal advice, I'd wear a shirt. You are crawling on the ground, carrying splintery logs, etc. I think it's best to cover up your tummy and back to try to avoid cuts and scrapes. I also wore Under Armour leggings and still managed to cut up my knees from all the crawling.
Best of luck on the Mudder!!0 -
Great point... do you recomment like a tank or long sleeve? I wonder if the long sleeve would end up with arms just being annoying or if it will serve as protection. It will be cold... there was a snow storm that weekend last year in NJ during October (fluke occurance but happened).
I hope to just run through without feeling them!
Thanks for the advice and good luck on your next TM too!!0 -
I did it in May - I only got shocked once and it didn't hurt at all. I saw all those videos on-line of people screaming like they're in pain when they run through it - but when you stand there in person, they start screaming before they even hit the obstacle to pump themselves up. Not painful at all, and if you're worried about it still, just run through right behind someone else, they clear the way for you haha.
also, having a long sleeve shirt will probably be nice on October and it will give your elbows some protection while crawling over rocky mud.0 -
I did the TM in May and must share the same sentiment. I got shocked and it didn't hurt at all. People psych themselves out about this last obstacle b/c the YouTube videos floating around. Don't watch them. I just put my head down and ran through it. After 2 secs I was like, "what? I'm done?"0

That's what I've heard too. Planning to do a mudder next year with my sis-in-law. Actually more worried about the ice bath.0 -
thank you guys SOOOOOO much!!! I should have realized that people may be exaggerating the shocks but on many videos it seemed like it really hurt. I have heard that the bigger the mass of the person the more electric charge so hopefully for me it's true lol I shall say "thank you sir, may i have another!"
Hey Spartacus, I have posted about that before and also did some research.. you may have muscle paralysis and loss of conscious awareness for a few seconds, but with a team to help pull you out and after a few seconds it's fine. Online they actually recommend dumping a bucket of water on a cold morning before a workout just to give the sensation or to do a few jumps in an ice filled kiddie pool. I plan on doing that in September :-)
Ever think about things like "oh yea the electric shocks don't hurt, the muscle paralysis doesn't last long" and then think "wow yes i just said that and yet i can't WAIT to get out there" lol and i still find the question from others "why would you do this" puzzling because DOESN"T EVERYONE want to??!!! lol
Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your replies!! Good Luck to all!!0 -

You and Sparticus.
The ice bath isn't that bad! lol you'll be fine.0 -

I can hear my sister in law: "Oh, it's just muscle paralysis and loss of consciousness. Don't be such a wuss, Spartacus. It's not like your heart stopped pumping for too long. Is the stretcher comfortable? Geez, this ambulance sure is crowded ..."0 -
hahaha don't worry after if your really chilly, and slightly delirious, from the ice, fire is next to warm you up! :-D I am soooooo stoked to be doing such a crazy race where that last sentence may seem joking and yet is true! whoohoo! although getting tips helps prevent little annoyances that might come up otherwise, like wearing gloves or wearing pants to cover the knees (stuff i hadn't thought about). i dont think the obstacles will be "that bad", even the ice... except the electric eel and shock therapy but again like you all said, that is more a mental "get over it and get that headband" thing!0

Well, being totally honest. I got dropped! I was an electrician for 10 years and thought that would prepare me somehow being shocked to many times in the past. . 2 out of 5 of us were shocked. And i was "shocked"
with the intensity. It shocked me on my head and it felt like I was punched in the face. Almost like a flash knockout. Next thing you know i was face down in the mud. Like mud in my eyes and mouth. It was surprisingly strong. My buddy was hit just as hard . The other 3 in our team went untouched. The event was a lot of fun for all of us and felt like a real accomplishment given we pushed out selves pretty hard. But the shock can bet legit. My advice, protect the head.
Have fun all. Cheers0 -
It wasn't bad at all.0
