Hey Everyone! Type 1 Diabetes Help

I am new to myfitnesspal and find it to be very cool. I am type 1 diabetic and have noticed how this site can help me with all the nutritional information that I need. I would like to get to know anyone that might know anything bout the site or anything that will make living with this disease more convenient. I love running and working out but have been struggling with trying to figure out the correct insulin to carb ratio I should have as well as my correction bolus I give for my high sugars. Anyone who knows of any new tools or ideas that can help make living with type 1 diabetes easier I would greatly appreciate your input!

Hi and welcome! I'm a T1, too, and there are lots of others on here as well. There's a Type 1 Group in the forums here if you want to join: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/249-type-1-juvenile-diabetics. Sounds like you're on a pump, right? Do you have a CGM? Several of us use them and find them to be very helpful. You can also work with your endo doc and a nutritionist to find the right insulin:carb ratio if you're struggling with it. Having T1 definitely makes it more challenging when you're trying to change to a healthier lifestyle, but it's definitely do-able! :)
  • Hey! Yeah I am and I also do have a CGM. I have recently finished playing college baseball and my physical activity has dropped but I have also changed my diet to a mediocre carb low fat diet. I have not been eating as much carbs as I did while playing ball and I feel that this new transition has caused me to have more lows especially while exercising. I have noticed that some corrections bolus will bring my sugar to the norm or on the low side where as sometimes the correction wont bring it down enough. I am working with a endo doc and have an appointment soon so hopefully we can get this figured out. Ive been trying to keep track of every food intake as well as all my sugars so I can eventually get the right numbers in the pump but would love to hear of any new ideas or accessories that will make life easier. Also I tried going to your link and it wouldn't come up. Is there another way to get to the group?

Sorry that link didn't work. Another way to find the group is to go to the Community tab and then click on Groups in the sub-navigation bar. In the Search box, type "type 1 - juvenile diabetics" and the group should show up. Let me know if that doesn't work...

MFP can "help" with the tracking of your blood sugar levels etc

my home > check in > track additional measurements
if you check your levels multiple times a day enter a measurement field for each time you check it...
    IE
    morning BS
    noon BS
    evening BS
adding as many as it takes to suit your requirements.

You can track anything that is specifically measurable in the reports, one entry per field tracked per day.
  • Very cool! Thanks!

Hey! I also have type 1 diabetes.
MyFitnessPal is definitely helpful, but its not the most accurate since its nutrition info is entered in by other users. I think the CalorieKing book is helpful, for counting carbs, especially when you eat out. Also, there are some helpful apps that record you bloodsugars, like Glucose Buddy and BGluMon.
For exercise, i just take off my insulin pump a half hour before and keep it off a half hour after or else by blood sugars will drop too low.
I guess its just trial and error till you find out what works. good luck :)
