I have been running for 2 years now. Recently due to stress and work I have been unable to run as much as normal and incidentally have gained some weight. I had planned to run a half marathon this September (23rd) and have already signed up for the race.

I am struggling with the weight loss part and my last long run had probably half running and half walking. I can still jog/run my shorter (<10km) runs but I just seem to be struggling...hoping I can get my weight loss on the go soon.

My question to you all is...in your opinion do you think I should still try to train over the next month and 3/4 for this half marathon or should I dial it down until I lose this extra weight? I don't want to hurt myself but I don't want to not do it.

Some extra information is that before my hiatus my longest run was 14km (with mostly running/jogging) lately my longest was 16km with about half running/jogging and half walking...maybe more since my feet hurt so much near the end that I had to walk the last 3km. I also have about 35lbs to lose.

Any advice would be appreciated, past experience etc.

Thanks :)

I would go for it since you have already signed up for the race (and paid i assume) and because you've been running for 2 years. If you've recently done a 16k, then I wouldn't be too worried about injuring yourself, I would just continue to walk/run as needed while you train. Unless the race you signed up for is extremely small, I doubt you will be the only one walking some. I've seen half's where people just walked the whole way. You have about 6 weeks of full training before you taper before your event, so you can grow a lot in that time too. I would do as much as you can until then, and then enjoy the race!
