Hip Pain

Hi everyone. I have been noticing at night that I have been horrible hip pain. I am a side sleeper cannot for the life of me sleep on my back or stomach. If I switch sides then that hip hurts really bad. Just started on Saturday and it's not getting any better no matter what pain meds I take. Any thoughts? I'm not noticing anything during the day to where it hurts, just at night when I sleep.

I have this problem - I dance, and being constantly in turned-out position causes it. I use a foam roller to massage out the sides - hips, side of the thighs, AND the back and shoulders. Usually it helps.
Also, if you go to a gym that has good equipment, see if you can find something to just straight-arm hang from. It'll help straighten out your spine. I have an inversion table at home which also helps with hip pain, but the straight-arm hanging pulls the other direction and often settles a problem. It's the last thing I do before leaving the gym!!0 -
I've had the same problem and finally struck on adding one of those mattress toppers about six weeks ago. It has made a huge difference.0

I've got a pillow top mattress, thinking about moving to the couch for a few days to see if that helps. I don't work out in a gym, mainly at home. But if it keeps up I'm probably going to get a massage.0

I am a massage therapist. I also get hip pain. When myself or my clients get hip pain I massage and stretch different areas of the hamstrings, quads, inner thighs, glutes and/or sacrum area (depending on the location of the hip pain). I ,of course, reccomend consulting a qualified massage therapist who specializes in sports massage. There are also self care techniques you can do once you find out what muscles are overly contracted and which are being overstretched. And self care techniques need to be approached with EXTREME CAUTION because you will further damage your muscles if you perform these techniques improperly or with to much force. I find that a lot of my hip pain and that of my clients come from the inner thigh muscles being tight which pulls the pelvis out of allignment cause pain at the hip joint. There are some great stretching and self massage techniques using medicine balls or foam rollers on youtube that can help (AGAIN USE EXTREME CARE NOT TO FURTHER TEAR THE MUSCLE FIBERS). The trick is find which muscle or muscle group that is causing the problem. If you find a good LMT make sure to tell them what you are feeling and ask them to check out all the muscles that attach to the pelvis. Below are a few links for self massage/stretch.

It took me a while to get my hip pain diagnosed and it was a bulging disc in my back. My pain is relieved by sleeping on my back with a pillow under my knees so your knees are bent a little.0
