Low Carb Fruits and Veggies? Suggestions/Advice

...just trying to diversify my new 2 week Paleo diet. I am trying NOT to go over 50g of carbs a day! But I would love to know if I could incorporate some kind of fruit...or something daily...that I can enjoy?

...also same for veggies?

I would look at berries--blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries... I am doing lowER carb myself, and they are about the only fruits I eat right now.

Is that 50g net or 50g total?

Blackberries, raspberries, strawberries are about the only fruits I'd even think about at that restriced carb level.

BERRIES, BERRIES, BERRIES!!!! Cauliflower, brocolli, salad greens. You can eat wonderful foods. Don't think of it as "I can't have this", think, "I can have this, this, this and this". You can eat wonderful foods and meals on this lifestyle!!

What does sugar turn in to in the body? Glucose, what do carbs turn in to the body? glucose

Your issue isn't sugar, it's carbs. I don't care what method you use, low carb, or paleo or whatever. The issue you're trying to solve is an over consumption of carbs.

Fruts and vegetables ARE CARBS. They both contain sugar. The solution to your problem is fiber. Look at fruits/vegetables with high fiber content, what comes to mind is blueberries and cabbage. You do know that fiber is also carbs? It's just indigestible. So it doesn't increase blood glucose.

Look at "net carbs" not "total carbs" "net carbs = total carbs - fiber" this is how much insulin inducing carbs you're REALLY eating.

Personally, I'm not into the super-low carb thing, BUT to add to what is being said above, the fibers in fruits allows your body to more slowly digest and release the sugars in the fruits. That is why eating whole fruits is so much better for you than eating simple sugars (like candy and what not). Well, the slower release of sugar AND the fact that fruits are chock-full of good nutrition. The American Diabetes Foundation's website has a lot of useful information on such factoids. Obviously understanding sugar and insulin and the effects on your body is what they do. :)

I calculate net carbs, and have just added natural pumpkin (Libby's brand) to my yogurts and eggs and it is low carb, and good source of fiber.

Yes but there is a difference between 'good sugar' and 'bad sugar'. Natural sugars found in fruit and veggies are broken down by the body a lot easier that sweetners and processed sugar that is not made by Mother Nature.

Not really, the glycemic index measures this and there are some high numbers for some fruits. Fruit is just fruit juice with some pulp and skin (aka animal feed), Fruit juice is basically a sugar solution, like coca cola with added minerals and vitamins.

Sucrose (table sugar) grows in sugar cane or sugar beet - "Mother Nature" makes them too. Sorry.

Avocado is a good low carb fruit ;-)
  • I read on a "cellular" level....the body STILL uses fruit sugars as simple sugar!

it is something to be eaten not as a norm really....Veggies are better to keep insulin production at bay.

wonder why God made "fruits"? :-))))

When I don't eat fruits regularly, I crave junk food and do much worse on my eating plan. I'm glad fruits exist.
  • yes I love fruits....mainly pineapple, melons, nectarines, sweet apples, kiwi!

but on the Paleo I am watching my carbs...so those are restricted...now at least when I do have them they WILL be a treat!!!! who needs pudding when you got FruitS!!!
