Healthy Craving Swaps

I noticed before that "diets" don't work, and I think the main reason is giving up my go to foods or comfort foods. Or worse, food types. I don't think it's the food itself I miss, so much as the type. You know, like, sweet, salty, starchey, etc. Well, I'm trying to work on some food swaps for those types and I'm not doing a good job myself because variety IS the spice of life.
I know I tried swapping out my sweet tooth with a small pudding cup. I figured portion control and they couldn't be that bad. They're not as bad as some things, but still, there's a lot of added sugar in pudding I don't want! As far as like, salty fixes or when I'm craving like mashed potato's or something, I got nothing.
Anyone else find any good things to replace old cravings with?

I think portion control is a really good strategy. I hear from alot of ppl who randomly lose weight telling me that they eat whatever they want but just watch HOW much they eat. So sometimes when i'm craving something i don't completely ban in from myself but i take a few bites or whatever it may be ha. As for food swaping im not too sure on some ideas:/ Ik if i keep craving unhealthy foods i just satisfy myself with eating a bowl of fruit and feeling good about my decision0

Haha I like that idea actually. I get picky though on fruit. It has to be just the right ripe. I need to stop doing that though, if it's a day past it's prime it should be ok! But I guess in the long run I should be thinking about being happy I made the right choice rather then satisfy the craving.0

My mom says it's not good to totally deny yourself the foods you like- instead just moderate how much you eat. She says if you deny yourself then it will make it worse... and I can attest. :I I tried a "detox diet" a year or so ago and only lasted like 3 days. It SUCKED.
I've found a good swap though is if I'm craving say... chips, I'll get a small bag of sunchips instead. Craving something sweet, I'll grab a thing of raisins or some sort of dried fruit.0 -
Omg im soo picky on fruit too! haha I only have like two favorite fruits that i can always just grab and eat. So usually i just snack on those haha somtimes i feel adventurous and grab something else but that happens once in awhile haha0

portion control is the key. i love chicken nuggest and french fries but if i eat portion size its good but if i eat it everyday then it wont do me any good. i have found that if you attempt to make the stuff yourself it tends to be better for you. I love chocolate and candy bars. i went to the store the other day and got fiber one bars: roasted almond, chocolate chip peanut butter etc...and i must say they fix the chocolate craving. if you enjoy bread get 100% whole wheat. the easiest thing i can say to do is just portion size when it comes to the bad stuff. i always do a trade off too. like if i want a real dr. pepper and a snicker bar i pick one or the other. or i do the snicker bar and a dr. pepper 10. people would always tell me its a mind control game you play with yourself and if you have no control then you will lose and that is so true. but if you want something try and wait a few days to see if the craving is still there if not then you are ok. if it is still there then take a bite or eat half and you will be ok.0

i allow myself 1 "junk" food a day. i do not bealieve that depriving yourself is the answer. it can be a cookie or a icecream but i have it almost every day.
when i want crunchy i go for an apple or yogurt with granola in it.0 -
One thing that just saves me is popcorn. I love popcorn and have discovered an easy and low cal version that I really enjoy. I air pop 5 cups of popcorn then spray it with butter-flavored spray and sprinkle on that popcorn flavoring you can buy. Yes, it's sodium. But I bet I've cut the calories by 70% just by not having the butter! It's only 150 calories and I feel like I get to snack on something in the evening. I love it! Of course you could do any kind of flavor in powder form instead of salt form, like garlic powder and chili powder. I love experimenting!
For sweets, I've found that I like some of the sugar free hard candies. I also have a Skinny Cow ice cream bar occasionally.
What I believe is that it's all about what you do MOST of the time. So, if you love apple pie and have a slice, you shouldn't feel bad. If you're doing it all the time - that's another story.0 -
Some food cravings come from nutritional deficiencies, even if you're only a tiny bit deficient. A common one is someone will go on a diet and cut all fat out of their diet, then before too long they're craving fatty foods. Well that comes from a lack of healthy fat in the diet, and can be fixed by ensuring you get enough healthy fat. It works in a similar way with most nutrients. So rather than blaming cravings on a lack of willpower all the time, look at what you're eating and whether you're deficient in any nutrients.
Sometimes cravings for sugar can come from poorly controlled blood sugar levels, and that can be remedied by eating healthy carbs and cutting out unhealthy carbs (or at least if you do have them, have them as part of a meal where you also have protein and healthy carbs, because this helps to keep your blood sugar levels more stable.
Beyond that I think portion control and eating what you like in moderation, as explained by others already, is a better strategy than total deprivation (although for some people who have issues with emotional eating and binge eating that is psychological in origin staying away from trigger foods may be a better strategy)0 -
Quakes Rice Snacks help when I want something crunchy--they come in alot of flavors (sweet and savory). Sweet chili is my fav.
I love chocolate and I just put a little chocolate peanut butter or chocolate almond spread on low calorie bread and have a chocolate sandwich. It's especially yummy if you toast the bread first. I like to use the Nature's Own Sandwich rounds.
Vlassic low sodium pickles seem to take the edge off of hunger for me--salty plus crunchy.
I really like the Weight Watchers smoke flavor string cheese too.0
