Going over on protein

This may sound stupid but I was just wondering about going over on protein. The last couple of days I've been way over. I started a protein drink in the morning and have had chicken for either lunch or dinner. Are mine set to low? Is is bad for me to have to much protein?

Good question. I have started drinking protein shakes as well and am going over my protein allowanda as well.
  • Most people on here will tell you that MFP's protein goals are set way too low. It's usually best to get 1-2g of protein per pound of your body weight in order to maintain your muscle mass while eating at a calorie deficit. If you are trying to gain muscle, you will want to eat even more. Fat and Carbs are the macros you usually want to worry the most about.

Should not be a problem unless your Doctor has told u otherwise or if you have any kidney trouble you may want to check with the Doctor.

But at 59 per day, that would not normally be considered high.

For most people the more the better, it keeps you fuller longer, burns fat and helps build lean muscle.

Just make sure you get in plenty of water and fiber along with exercise!!!

    Best of Luck!!

I just joined MFP in January. This has been a long, six year journey. I've just started tracking my protein because I'm now working more on building muscle now that I don't have as much fat. I've heard so many conflicting theories so I'm hoping to get some good advice here.

Your protein goal looked to be 41g ? 164 calories out of 1100 - that's at the bottom of the range, so going over it isn't a problem.

25-30% of calories from protein is more usual for dieters, so 60 - 80g per day in your case. At 0.8g per lb of lean body mass that would be about right too, 80g = 100 lb lean body mass.

Watch out for ratios - usually it is quoted as grams protein per lb lean body mass, sometimes grams protein per kg of total body weight etc etc. Double check if in doubt !

Your protein is fine. You could even go up. 1 gram per kg of body weight is a good benchmark. You total calories over the last few day however are a concern. You are undereating and consistently below 1200 calories. That is potentially damaging to your health.
  • Go back into your Goals from the main home page on MFP (its on the blue bar at the top). Change the Goals and do "Custom" vs. Guided. From there you can change the % of calories from the various marco nutrients. I have mine set at 40% Carb/40% Protein/20% fat. You can change these to whatever you desire so if you're trying to do lower carb you could even do 30% carb/50% protein/20% fat. Whatever your heart desires.

The MFP default is 55% carbs (too high for my taste) and is the reason you keep tracking over your protein.

Regardless there's nothing wrong with you going over them nutritionally but it might just make you feel better not seeing the negative number.

I have problems not meeting my protein goal. I have mine currently set to 45/20/35 (carb/fat/protein). Is this okay? I'm trying to lower my fat, so far I've been losing a little bit of weight. Should I change it to 40/30/30 instead?
