Just starting this :)

Hello my name is Heather and i am 38, have a Thyroid imbalance and can not seem to lose weight. Tried lots of things, even walking 3 miles a night with a group of woman. Took me all summer to lose 20 pounds and put it back on in 1 month. Now that my body is on meds that balance my metabolism, it thinks well this is normal and where i should be. But when i look in the mirror all i see is me in a fat suit. I have done so many things like quit smoking, and use olive oil when cooking, no pop. Ext. This site says i can eat 1800 calories, but my doctors says 1200?????????? Any ideas

    Hello! Welcome to MFP!

MFP is a really great resource to keep you focused and connect you with a wealth of fitness resources and like minded folks.

    1. Log your foods every day - don't skip days, or parts of your day. log everything!
    2. Analyze each day - see where it went good and where it went bad - too much fat? maybe too many carbs? over the calorie limit? Identify and plan how to correct it for tomorrow.
    3. Reach out to the community with questions or advice needs.
    4. Build a network of friends here!
    5. Above all, do not believe everything you read here. There is a lot of great advice, but also some misleading and hype type advice. Part of getting fit is educating yourself in aspects of health and fitness. Make sure any questionable advice is looked at with a scientific eye and look for facts, evidence, and most importantly real world proof.
    6. You are more than a number. Sometimes the scale may not say what you hoped - thats fine. weight loss is not a straight line declination. Its a bumpy line that drops over time. Don't let single day numbers get your focus away from term based results.
    7. Vary your exercises. Your body forms memories and can slow down how it burns fat and builds muscles. Keep it confused! Hit it hard with cardio styles. Build lean muscle to burn even more fat.
    8. and above all - take your photo now! You will want to look back and have a starting BEFORE picture to proudly display along with your series of PRESENT or CURRENT photos during your transformation and continued lifestyle of fitness.

I welcome you, and anyone else out there to add me as a friend. I have made fitness and health my passion and love the idea of folks joining me in my new lifestyle of being fit, healthy, and most importantly - HAPPY!.

I'm here to support and motivate!!! I find my own success comes easier when I help and fuel other folks success.

and remember - most folks care more about the quality of fuel they put in their lawn mowers than the fuel they put in their bodies. Don't be one of those people. Whole foods. Natural foods. Intelligent choices.

    Fit for life,

I don't mean to pick apart your post but just some questions...

So you were you diagnosed with HypoThyroidism?

"even walking 3 miles a night with a group of woman."
    How Often? Heart Rate?

"Took me all summer to lose 20 pounds..." .
So you lost 20 pounds in 2 months (8 weeks) - 2.5 pounds per week. Recommended healthy weight loss for sustained health is no more than 1 pound per week...

"and put it back on in 1 month"
Ok, so according to above you dropped 20 pounds during this summer (which is June and July) - So you gained back 20 in August (aka you gained 20 pounds back in a week?)

"I have done so many things like quit smoking, and use olive oil when cooking, no pop."
Quitting smoking is good for overall health, but not sure will directly affect weight loss, Same with using olive oil. it takes a complete lifestyle change to lose weight.... If you are using olive oil to cook but still eating Sundaes and chips it's not gonna help much... just sayin.

"This site says i can eat 1800 calories, but my doctors says 1200?????????? Any ideas"
MFP is just a base guide and will spit back a base calorie intake depending on how you answer your profile. If you are not honest or answer in some odd way, it will generate and unusual result. I personally find the base calorie intake high. The real power in the site comes in allowing you to track your food, macro nutrients and your exercise production daily. It's really basic actually - if you are not creating a calorie deficit you won't lose weight - period. You can create a deficit either by taking in below your base calorie rate, or by burning more calories via exercise. Either way, it needs to be closely tracked.

Just my 2 cents - but the first step is being starkly honest, both in completing the profile and then in a very disciplined way, tracking your food and exercise - for at least 2 weeks. it was a HUGE eye opener for me and I could not believe how many calories I was taking in and how little I was burning...

There is a thyroid group you could join for more help.
All I could find in my online searching is thyroid effected peeps should eat 10% less than recommended.
so if mpf says 1800 you should reset it to 1620
you can still eat more if you do exercise above your activity level setting

Hi Heather: Welcome to MFP. It is awesome! It keeps me accountable and inspires me to exercise more!! You can do this! About the calories, you probably should do what your Dr. says. 1200 calories is what has been suggested for me also. Small portions and more exercise seems to work. I'm not losing very fast but it is coming off slowly. Please feel free to add me as a friend if you would like! There are some great people on this website and they are very encouraging! We can do this together!! Victoria
