Strength Training Beginner

Hi!
I love my cardio - mainly running (I'm a horrible bike rider, you do not want me on the roads... even with sidewalks).
I know strength training is good for me, but it's not my favorite. However, I think it is more that I'm not sure exactly how to go about it rather than me just flat out disliking it. I used to be a competitive horse back rider and archer - the strength came with the sports, and I didn't have to go to the gym for it. My favorite exercises are by using free weights - I'm not much into the machines. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to start out and how and when to progress? Personal experience and/or websites would be great! Thanks!

Someone linked this one a while back. I literally JUST started it though so I can't speak of any results.

I started with Stronglifts 5x5. It is a progressive program. It seems to be one of the most recommended programs for beginners.0

The results will be good. It is one of two I listed in this post that will tell you all you need to know to get started in strength training, fat loss, etc. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/686963-large-collection-of-info-for-beginners0 -
You can find lots of programs online but here are the basics of what you need to know.
1. Do a compound exercise for each muscle group. I usually recommend some sort of squat, romanian deadlift, bench press, row, and shoulder press to start out with.
2. Perform your basic routine 3x per week, with 2-4 sets for each muscle group of 8-12 reps.
3. Every workout, increase the reps up to 12. Once you hit 12, increase the weight and start over at 8.
4. Rest about 1-2 minutes between each set.
Do this until you plateau in strength. Then you are ready to do a more advanced routine. If you feel uncoordinated with free weights, use machines.0
