Things You Wish You'd Known Before

I started out on my weight loss journey three months ago, and since then, I've learned a lot about how to go about losing weight. Even though I've got a long way to go still (about 140 pounds), I feel encouraged with the knowledge I've gathered, both from others and from experience.
Some of the things I've incorporated into my new lifestyle:
1) This is not a diet, this is a permanent lifestyle change, which means I need to make changes I can live with for the rest of my life.
2) When a person has so many bad habits (which I did), and they need to form new and better habits, it's best to start with small changes over time, than to try to do a total overhaul at once.
3) Whether you have a small or large amount to lose, it's better to divide your goals into ones that are nutrition and exercise-oriented, with weight loss as a secondary goal. Weight loss comes from better habits.
4) Drink water!
5) EAT. Starving yourself does not work. If you feel hungry, eat. Just be aware of the content of what you're eating, and the serving sizes.
6) Small amounts of exercise are better than none, and it takes time to build endurance. I started out walking ten minutes a day (and needing to rest for a few seconds during that!). I'm now walking 60 minutes a day, with no breaks, and even that has become almost too easy.
7) Break up weight loss goals into smaller, short-term goals, such as going down one size, losing one inch off your waist, etc.
8) Log your successes, no matter how "small"! There are so many smaller successes during the process of getting healthy, and they all add up to one huge success!
How about everyone else? What have you learned? What are some of the best tips that you've incorporated into your new lifestyle?

I just started this site yesterday and it's amazing how much attention I've paid to what I have been eating. It's too easy to keep taking a bite here and there but when you know you have to log it, you think twice about that bite! Gotta long way to go and I love reading all the comments.0

Sodium matters...if you cut sodium you'll lose faster and more. Drinking water matters.0
