Fat days

Even though I'm under my calorie count and have been for about two weeks, today I felt HORRIBLE. It was just one of those days where I felt fat and hopeless about this whole thing! That extra bit of flab on my stomach was extra noticeable to me and it just felt AWFUL.

Anyone else have "fat days" and how do you push through?

I feel ya, Zach :) I had a fat weekend... precipitated by a fat 20 odd years. Although since starting my 'get healthy' journey I've been feeling a lot better about myself, this weekend just wasn't working for me. My clothes didn't seem as loose as they'd been and I didn't want to go outside.

And yes, it's hard to get through... but the one thing I've been holding on to this time around is that it's a marathon, not a sprint. Every other time I've tried the fitness / weightloss thing I've gone hell-for-leather and then quit as soon as I hit a hurdle.. or a binge.. or a fat day. This time, I'm accepting that even skinny, perfect people have fat days or blow outs sometimes but after 24 hours you get a re-set. You get to start over.

Also, I drink heaps of water in the hopes that maybe I can dilute the fat :P and check MFP for support / to go through my previous diaries and remind myself that I'm on the right path. It's not much, but I hope a little solidarity helps at least :)

yep. it's just one of those discouraging days that I need to move past!! Also it doesn't help that I weighed myself on a new scale this morning that showed 189.5 lbs instead of the 181 that I measured two days ago at home. I know it's not true but still scary to see that number!

I'm going through some fat days right now.

First, I almost broke my toe. No working out for me. Then, when the swelling in my toe got to the point where it wasn't painful anymore, I caught a cold. No working out for me. Now, I injured my right shoulder painting my bathroom. No working out for me!

It's been about ten days since I've been to the gym, and I've been going consistently 3-4 times a week for months. I feel it in my body. I feel flabbier and less upright when I stand. My balance feels off. I'm trying not to kill myself over the pound I've gained (I'm on maintenance here on MFP and I know that gaining/losing 1-2 pounds/week is normal when you're maintaining).

I'm going on vacation next week. No working out for me!

What gets me through it is thinking back to March. I'd suffered an injury to my left rotator cuff and ended up seeing an orthopedist. He sent me for physical therapy. While I was in therapy, I asked at every session what kind of exercise I could do safely. "Give it a rest" is what they said (I'd injured the RC jogging on the treadmill, so they didn't even want to let me do any cardio). I did physical therapy for a month, stuck to my diet and managed to lose a pound over the course of the treatment. Meanwhile, I felt miserable because I wasn't allowed to hit the gym.

When I was released from all restrictions, I went back with full gusto. It felt so good! It was like that first breath after nearly drowning.

That's what gets me through "fat days". Thinking about how awesome it's going to feel when I get to return to my routine. The pound I gained? This flabby feeling? They're not as bad as the great I'll feel when I get back from vacation and can jump back on the bandwagon!

Yes even skinny people have fat days! I'm not skinny, but I'm at a normal body weight and there are those days that I only feel okay in baggy clothes.

    Too true!

Also... with your injury proneness (I can relate), have you tried swimming? It's nice and low impact and is actually a pretty good workout... Might be worth a shot? Either way, hang in there!

I have days where I feel like I'm on my way to hotness and then I have days where I feel like I will never get there and why bother. I have tried to lose weight so many times and failed but for some reason it's different this time. Every time I feel like throwing in the towel I just tell myself that even if I don't lose weight and get all sexified that making good food choices and exercising is good for me and the benefits are endless. I have to repeat it many times some days but this time its sticking and like I said I don't know why but I'm happy it is!

I think everyone does, unfortunately. For some reason I felt really bloated today, so I felt huge :(

I try to just have faith in what I am doing and the journey that I am on, as well as myself in general. I know logically that I am working out, eating right, being healthy in general, and that everything will work out and I will be fit/healthy/thinner eventually if I stay to it. So I guess I just try to believe that and in the progress that I know I have made.

Anyway, it happens. Try not to get too discouraged and just keep going.

The catch is not to turn the mental fat days into physical fat days... you know you think "stuff it, its not making a difference so i might as well east that whole chocolate bar/cake/ packet of chips etc."

Much harder to recover from those, and you feel as lot worse for it.

To funny!! I felt the exact same way this weekend! I was feeling good about myself and like I was actually loosing weight went and looked in the mirror and looked like I was when I was 5 months pregnant!! I just got on the treadmill and cleared my mind it helped me.
  • I think somedays even if you are feeling healthy you can be bloated from eating certain foods, dont let it discourage you as it means nothing on the scales - try to avoid bread/pasta for a couple of days as these two are killers for making you bloated. x
