Really sore after workout...keep going?

I have a question and I know so little about exercise that I need to ask. I did a workout on Friday like I have never done before...courtesy of my new personal trainer and I am supposed to do it again today but I hurt so bad from Friday that I can barely lift my own arm. I have been taking a ton of ibuprofen and Aleve just to function during the day and get a little sleep at night. Would I be damaging something doing the same workout again today, or have I already damaged something that I continue to have this kind of pain 3 days later? My trainer is out until next week so I can not ask her and I am supposed to do this workout Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week without her. Help.

    Sore? Keep doing it.
    Injured? Stop, assess.

You most likely have muscle soreness from doing exercise you are not used to doing. Stretching, cardio using those muscles (eg, cycling for legs) and, yes, repeating the offending exercise can reduce the soreness.

That initial stage of soreness is something you must work through. After a week it won't hurt anymore.

IF YOU HAVE INJURED something, you need to raise it with the trainer who can give you better advice.

Don't be afraid of soreness. It is a good thing. It means you really worked out hard.

soreness is good - you will often get it when doing something your muscles having acclimated to. I would suggest backing off the pain killers and getting some cardio in to loosen up those muscles
  • I agree. Soreness is good but it sucks too. Soreness is a sign of very small rips in the muscle, which will promote healing and strengthening in the muscle. The tiny injuries make the muscle stronger. Large injuries are bad, but building muscle requires small injuries.

Backing of the pain killers would probably be good too. My wife was regularly taking ibuprofen for migraines before jaw surgery. Her liver is now much weaker and her liver enzymes tests have been all over the place over the past year. At this point, heat is one of my favorite treatments. The heat dilates blood vessels and promotes cell healing.
