Finding my nieche...

I feel so incredible discouraged today! From Thanksgiving to Christmas I stayed away from all refined sugars and carbs.

I felt GREAT! AMAZING! I was able to do so much! Over the holidays I did cheat and have a few treats but it didn't bother me very much since I know I could just get right back on the wagon. However during this whole diet, I've been getting some pressure from my very loving husband. He is under the impression that carbs are very important to anyone's general diet and thus I shouldn't be cutting them out entirely.

Overall, I think he is right. Carbs like wheat are important for a balanced diet. So I decided this past weekend to start introducing some more healthy carbs back into my meals. It was amazing at first! Suddenly I was able to hit my calorie goal (I always would come up 300-400 calories short!) It was so nice to not have to think so deeply about what I was putting in my mouth. I went to the store and picked out a sugar free, high fiber cereal, thrilled to have other options.

Weeeelll...Between the whole grain pasta last night and the cereal this morning: I am a wreck. I feel like I have gained 100 pounds and I'm bloated everywhere. Even my face! I feel like I have retained every drop of water that I have drank in the last week. I'm groggy and slow and haven't done ONE thing today. I even feel like I'm having cramps which isn't possible!

So I feel very overwhelmed. I did so well with my diet before this intake of whole grains and now I feel like I will be starting at square one with cutting them out again. I can already feel a withdrawal headache coming on! How insane is this? I wonder if I have a wheat allergy...nonetheless, I obviously have something going on where my body just doesn't like carbs.

On top of this, my coumadin has been out of control lately, more or less since my November hysterectomy. I had a stroke 3 days before Cmas and its just been impossible to regulate. Now my doctor is saying NO GREENS because of the vitamin K factor. He's thinking maybe my increase in them is just too much for my blood. I've been living on them the past 6 weeks. I've been snacking on veggies like there is no tomorrow.

So recap: No carbs or wheat and no veggies. I guess I will just have to eat meat and....cheese?

Maybe it is just the sudden change. When you are used to eating something, your body craves it, and when you are not used to eat, then your body reacts differently.

Of course my answer is only my opinion, but you should give it a try for a few days, eventually your body will adjust to the new additions and subtractions in your diet. Then when you weigh in or do your measurements, you can then gage how things really are.

oh wow... no wheat, carbs or vegies kinda rules out an awful lot :frown:

like "teetee" said, it's probably to do with the sudden change in your diet. as a general rule, when you completely remove something from your diet, then decide to add it back in, you need to very slowly reintroduce it to your body, because your body will no longer be familiar with it.

have you been tested for wheat/gluten intolerance? it might be an idea to make an appointment to see a nutrionist, because they'll be able to advise you on the best kind of foods to eat.

if the bloating is caused by an intolerance to gluten, which it sounds quite likely that it is, you can get all sorts of gluten free products at the supermarket (well... i'm assuming here that your supermarkets in the US are the same as they are here in Aus!) like gluten free cereals, flour supplements for baking etc., snacks... they're surprisingly tasty. i'm not gluten intolerant, but a good friend of mine is, and so i've tried a fair bit of it. even if you're not intolerant to gluten, this stuff is generally better for your health than processed flour etc.

moral of the story - carbs are important, yes, but there are a huge variety of ways to get them and you need to try out what's best for your body. cutting them out altogether doesn't have to be the solution.

ah i hope that's some help... look after yourself and try to keep your chin up! you'll get through this!
