Habe your Dr. test for gluten intolerance. I eliminated gluten and it was the best thing I ever did! I also have eliminated processed flours. I use Coconut, Almond and Flax flours. I am a happy person now! Also, sugar can be a problem for GERD.

I was diagnosed with GERD this past winter. The pain would get sooo bad that I thought I was having a heart attack. The pain radiated up my chest to my throat and up to my ears. It felt like a vice was constricting my chest.

My doctor put me on Dexilant and it has worked wonders. The freedom I feel is awesome.

I wish you luck because I know how painful and frustrating it can be.

Get evaluated for a hiatal Hernia. Those are my symptoms and what I have. I'm having corrective surgery in November
  • LPCoder, what were your symptoms with gluton intolerance?

I also heard it could be from too little stomach acid. http://scdlifestyle.com/2010/04/the-specific-carbohydrate-diet-cures-gerd/

A few tips from a long time sufferer. Try not to eat too much at one time, eliminate late night eating (I usually eat no later than 6pm) and elevate your head with two pillows in bed, sleep on your left side too. Alcohol also will relax the sphincter and should be avoided.

I did the route of the elevated bed. I wouldn't eat after 4 pm. Never more than just a bit in my tummy so I wasn't over filling it. Yet I lived with it every day for over 20 years. Constantly! But even a drink of water could set it off raging to the horrid point.
I was diagnosed with hiatal hernia, and GERD. Got to see the burnt up pictures of my esophagus. That is not a site you care see!

Now, I am cured. 100%! I NEVER have heartburn.

Gluten Free. Yep, you have another vote on it. The first day I didn't eat gluten it began to subside and was gone in less than a week.

Can you imagine a life without it? I couldn't. But you won't realize how miserable you are, until you do what it takes to make it go away.

Good luck if you don't quit gluten!

I have acid reflux/GERD and I also have some asthma. I'm not sure what you mean by choking, but the asthma did make my throat feel like it was being squeezed right around my voice box, and this is certainly exacerbated by the reflux. Maybe go see an ENT as well?

I have GERD. I am wondering if you might not have a problem with stricture. I felt as if I was strangling when I ate. Sure enough the gastroscopy showed that the esophagus was blocked with scar tissue. It took a simple procedure to unclog the plumbing problem.

Since then, I have been on Losec, and recently switched to Zantac. The drugs prevent the build-up of scar tissue.

    Other tips:
Raise the head of your bed by six inches. This is more comfortable than pillows.
    Sleep on you left side.
Eat small meals, and eat them more often.
Chewing gum produces saliva which neutralizes the burn by bathing the esophagus with something alkaline.
Avoid tea, coffee, anything acidic, alcohol, and extremely hot spiced food.
    Lose weight.
Don't eat 3 hrs before going to bed.
    Don't over-eat
Avoid apple cider vinegar, no matter how many people tell you it will solve your problems.

Welcome to the human race. Many, many of us have this problem.

Thank you so much for sharing! Now I have hope that I'll feel normal again someday! Sounds like I need to do my homework on Gluten Intolerance.

I had horrible acid reflux that no pill would stop, and I had some gas and bloating. I chose to go off gluten and my symptoms went away. Whenever I decide to eat something made with wheat, white or rye (though rye doesn't effect me as bad) I immediately get heartburn again. No pasta for me, I am happy with spaghetti squash!
