I'm a day away from ending my first week working out. Is it possible to gain 1.5 lbs of muscle in a week? I began my weight loss journey at 187 lbs, went down to 182.5 for a few days, now today I am 184 lbs.

I've worked out to Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred so I have been incorporating her video for 5 days now (remaining day added rest day). I have been eating under 1659 calories a day. I usually work out in the morning before I eat and use whey powder post-workout.

Thoughts?

most likely water retention. As you exercise, you cause tiny tears in the muscles....this is good, in that as the muscle repairs itself, it becomes stronger. But it takes water and nutrients for that repair work to be done. Often times, one will see a gain on the scale right after starting such exercise.

For a female, with no hormonal imbalances, not lifting very heavy and not taking any drugs -highly unlikey. You just started working out . Inflammation from the muscle fiber being torn during resistance training can cause weight changes. Water retention, glycogen storage, fecal matter and undigested food can all attribute to weight fluctuation from day to day, hour to hour. etc. If I get a good carby meal I can go up 5 pounds in a day. Track your trends for the month.

This. If you feel any soreness or stiffness from exercise, that's the inflammation and fluid retention we're talking about. Normal and temporary.

Thank you all for your great answers!

The first two days I felt sore afterwards but now I only feel it when I workout.

Perhaps its still water retention then? Usually for me it takes about 7-8 days to notice a shift on the scale for a loss of 1.5 to 2 lbs.. today was the 8th day and it shot up. I had amazing results from working out within days but now it looks like I'm bloated and I haven't gone over my sodium intake. Not sure what to think:
