Gained 3Ibs since Friday Evening.

I have gained 3 Ibs since Friday evening, and although I binged a bit over the weekend( I have a few issues with bulimia) which has not caused weight gain in the past, I am fairly sure it is down to something else in my diet I have changed. I was stable at around 126 for a month which is what I wish to maintain at for now and before that, 124/125 for a few months. I am pretty upset about it and agonising over what might be the cause. I am not due my TOM. I do not go over on sodium.

My diet has changed a little over the last week or so. I have been having an extra piece of fruit or two each day and been having more in the way of cheese products, such as philadephia and goats cheese, not in major quantities but on top of the tub of cottage cheese I already have each day. Plus I have had potato for a few nights running, again, not in large quantities and they never affected my weight in the past. I have been doing interval training for an hour most days, at level 9-11, on elliptical or stationary bike whereas I used to cycle outside a lot more, so not sure if that could affect my weight.

But to put on this much in a matter of days, is upsetting for me. It has gone from 125.8 on friday evening, to 126.6 sunday evening and today 128.8. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I have opened my diary, but please bear in mind I binge/purged on wed, sat and sun (for which I am having help and which has never caused my weight to climb over the last 6 months). I am not purging anymore, and have no intention of doing that again.

I just want advice or ideas as to what I have changed diet wise since Thurs/Frid that might be causing this issue. Thanks.

You mean, not worry about the gain and cause ?

Maybe I can help. A few weeks ago I did the same thing except it was five pounds over three days. Of course, I weigh significantly more than you do. I was discouraged as this is the sort of thing that usually gets me discouraged. However, instead of giving up like I usually do, or going crazy with worry and eating less than I should, I just ate the amount of calories I was supposed to have every day. In a few days, it dropped right back off plus a little more. Weight fluctuates sometimes. I wouldn't worry about it. At your current weight, I can't imagine it being a problem anyway.
  • When do you normally weigh? If you normally weigh on fridays, then you have a few days still and weight fluctuates over the course of a week. You also said your diet changed a bit...does that happen to include an increase in sodium? If so, that's your cause and solution.

As difficult as this probably is to do, given your history, yes.

Are you also seeing a professional about this? (Someone with ED experience?)

EDIT: Sorry, I re-read your OP and I see you ARE getting help.

I would like to change my entire answer:

I think you should defer this question to the professional you are seeing.

    ^ What he said ^_^
Weight fluctuates as much as 5 lbs a day. On and off, I'm certain you're alright

I agree with Sidesteal. Make sure that you're in total control of your ED - first and foremost.

Ultimately, you're beautiful and weight loss should be the least of your worries.

I weigh every evening before dinner currently, but sometimes leave weighing for a week or two. Increase in sodium is possible as I have been having some guacamole and philadephia which I assume will contain sodium.

Yes, that's what he means. And it's good advice. As you must know, your weight can vary by as much as a few pounds every day. Now, you probably also know that in order to gain a pound, you must eat 3,500 calories above your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure).

So, do the math. Unless you ate 10,500 calories above your TDEE (3,500 x 3) over the past few days (doubtful, isn't it?), then you didn't gain three pounds. Period.

Stress and lack of sleep can contribute to weight gain. So I too agree that you should let it go and resume all your normal activities. That's easier said than done. Best of luck!

This happened to me a few weeks ago; the reading of the scale made me happy then 48 hours later the scale made me sad. To resolve this I gave the scale a bad finger took measurements, then rode my bike, drank an extra glass of water and did nothing. My monthly started and the weight went back to normal. Sometime that darn scale can be an evil demon out to sabotage your progress. Don’t let "the scale" bring you down!

Thankyou and yes I am working to get a grip on the ED, which is nowhere near as severe as it has been in my past and is more a relapse than anything.

Any time you change your diet significantly, your body gets a signal to store that which you don't get regularly. It doesn't understand that your body won't get those nutrients again soon. It stores those things that it doesn't get often. So if you are purging those things that you believe are unhealthy, as soon as your body recognizes those things, it goes into store mode. If you are binge/purging regularly it throws off your body's ability to know what it needs. So if you expect to lose weight by purging, it won't work because your body will store those nutrients as soon as it gets it. If you eat a healthy diet, feed your body what it needs and work out regularly, you will lose weight.

Yes, I had managed to ditch the scale for over 2 weeks until recently, and started weighing again Friday to see what was happening. It does not encourage me to drop the scale when I am seeing gains like this, obviously, my concern is that something I am doing will cause it to continue going up and up. I had already settled on a higher maintenance weight than before, so to find myself going over that by almost 3 Ibs is disappointing and unsettling. My weight is usually pretty much the same every evening until this point, give or take half a pound.

I would not weigh yourself everyday and use other methods to determine progress ie. gym performance, measurements.

Scales = the random number generator.

And agree that you should probably be speaking to the health professional rather than randoms on the internet anyway.

Personally I think weighing every day is a good way to make you go bonkers. Maybe try weighing once a week (or twice) and then you won't have to worry about daily fluctuations? Remember, 16 ounces of water weighs one pound, and if you had more sodium than usual your body is hanging onto more water, and if you haven't been to the bathroom, etc, etc, 3 pounds isn't really anything.

Unless I counted wrong, you ate over 15,000 calories in that time which would put weight on me and i 'm 250 lbs.

With what i burn with exercise, i generally maintain at 2500-2800 calories. I would have to go 3500 calories over that, 3 times to gain 3 pounds. Aside from saturday when i binged badly and purged and went over by about 3000, i have not eaten over my tdee in the last 5 days to my knowledge. I was 800 under monday and 500 under yesterday.

If you binge and purge, I would think you have an eating disorder and need to take care of that first. Maybe your excerssive exercising plays into that. Only my openion.

I would guess the SMALL gain you saw is either a normal fluctuation or the fact that you went over 3,000mg OVER your sodium limit on Sat at least.
