apple body shape

Hey are there any fellow apple shapes out there than can offer any diet or exercise advice?
No matter what I do on previous get fit attempts my largest problem area of my belly stays put and my thin legs and small bum just get smaller! Fed up of being two sizes to three bigger on the top then the bottom.
Have you found cutting out certain foods or doing certain exercises has helped shift your belly? I also suffer from IBS so not sure if this causes extra 'swelling'.
Thanks

Haha same here, my bf doesn't want me to lose my chest, I on the otherhand would love half of them tobe gone!
  • OK so I'm an apple shape (or at least I used to be) and have always had the same problem you're having, tiny legs and arms with a big midsection. The problem is you really can spot reduce anything. BUT I promise you that the more weight you lose, the smaller your waste is going to get. If you are currently doing any ab exercises like crunches, immediately stop as this will build up the muscle underneath the fat on your belly making it appear even bigger. One of the quickest and most convenient exercises to lose weight and tone up those arms and legs is Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred video. BUT when she is doing the ab workout section, I always do jumping jacks instead and have had amazing results with this.

Oh best stop the crunches and planks then. I would never have thought of that. I have the 30 day shred dvd, attempted it for period of a few days last year and think I pulled every muscle going! Will try it again though.

Stop doing crunches? Huh. I'll try that, thanks.

Wow, I just got finished listening to the news and so you know u r definitely not alone!! They suggested that you get enough protein....eat whole eggs instead of whites....exercise for 30 min 5 days a week...but be sure u do not exercise any longer....take conjugated linoleic acid everyday (sorry I didn't catch the dosage) It was funny because all the newscasters were trying to grab the CLA that the Dr brought to the studio.....the funny part is none of them looked like they had a pound to lose!!

Just be patient and stick with your program- problem areas are always the last to go- that's why they're such a problem! It's probably not that your previous attempts didn't work, it's just you probably gave up before the battle was won. It can take a long time, but rest assured, it will happen eventually.

I agree that crunches and any other specific ab work is a waste of time unless you are addressing a weakness or injury that prevents you from performing other activities. A great program to speed things up would be weight lifting 2-3x/wk, 30-45 mins, full body compound lifts (try stronglifts 5x5 or NROLFW) and moderate intensity cardio 3-4x/wk. Do some of the cardio after weight lifting for maximum fat burning effects.

Believe me, between running and compound lifts, my abs still get sore, they get plenty of training!

Thanks for the advice. Will have to google that conjugated linolic acid as I have never heard of it amd not sure where to get it!
Not sure I push myself hard enough at gym on my own so going to switch to bodypump and bodycombat classes as more inclined to work harder in group classes.

LOL... My mother and I always said we were "eggs on toothpicks". I haven't gotten far enough to give you any kind of credible advice on that. I've noticed that I lost fat in a lot of places I wasn't quite as concerned with. (As opposed to my gut) I think it's true what they say... the last place you gained is the first place you lose.

I had this same problem. What works for me is lots and lots of fruit , vegetables and, water. I would workout like crazy and lose everything except my stomach and it was huge. A friend suggested a 14 day challenge to of just fruits, vegetables and water just to see if that would help to shrink my belly. YES IT DID!!!! No I didn't continue strictly that way after the 14 days but, that is the most part of my diet. This way works exceptionally for me.

Simple diet and exercise. I thought I read something about not doing crunches and I disagree but everyone is different. I think there is no way to burn off that fat unless you work on abs PLUS arms, legs, shoulders, back. I've been doing the 30 Day Shred and I think I'm one of Jillian's biggest fans right now lol

I have been taking Genuine Health's abs+ which has CLA and green tea extract in the right amounts and potency and GH's lean+ extra strength to help boost my metabolism and build muscle. They have a variety of health supplements and I've used a few in the past.

I once did the 30 Day Shred for longer than I am at now in the program without CLA and I really see the difference my healthy habits plus the softgels and hard work are doing.

Stick with it! The belly area is a big problem.. I had two kids and the weight has piled on all over my midsection and hips.. my legs are smaller though.. lol. It can be solved though and thats through exercise and healthy eating habits!! Good luck to you!

I agree SOME ab work must still be done.

It can be difficult to find shorts that fit a skinny thighed, skinny assed build, even when the tummy almost qualifies as flat. I'm long legged and short waisted, which means I'm doomed to always be thick waisted. There simply isn't enough room there for a well defined waist. So heavy or not, I've always had a difficult time finding shorts that fit my waist without being huge in the seat and thighs. Skirts and dresses, on the other hand... My generation wore them fingertip length in our teens, generally without much of an emphasis on the waistline. I had the perfect build for times.

Oh, I forgot to address the original question. I run 6 - 8 miles every other day and probably have as big a butt as I've ever had in my life. It's still small, but at least it has some shape to it. I was afraid running would make my thighs smaller, but it hasn't really. They just look more muscled.

I started a thread on this a while ago & have had many conversations regarding it. Can't spot reduce. The main key is cardio. You have to burn the fat off. Tummy is first to gain and last to lose. I have found that monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) are helpful. Look them up. It's avocados, nuts, olive oi, & dark chocolate. I try to have a serving a day. It's supposed to help burn belly fat. Absolutely continue your crunches and planks. You want to work the muscles under the fat layers. Otherwise you'll just be a marshmallow after you lose the weight. Your tummy will NOT get bigger. It only appears that way because the rest of your body is changing and your tummy hasn't caught up with it yet. I was getting really frustrated and wondering if it was ever going to happen for me but this past month has been incredible. I've basically stayed the same weight but my family and friends keep complimenting me on how my tummy has gone down. And I do see it too. I've always been a perfect rectangle but not anymore. Finally, my chest is 1.5 inches more than my waist and hips! It took 66 lbs to lose for it to happen for me. I still have 54 more lbs to go. But this should give you some serious hope that it will happen. Just be patient and stay the course. Best of luck to you.

P.S. The IBS is definitely a factor as well due to the bloating. Keep a close watch on the simple carbs, refined sugars, dairy products and sodium. They are the enemies for those of us with IBS.

same problem here. i have an anti-waist. regular waisted shorts/pants i have to pull up to my boobs, and low rise shorts make me look fatter, and i lose whatever *kitten* i *might* have. skirts have become my friend.

i am apple-ish shaped. i have a bit of a natural waist, but my middle is really my problem. i don't have small legs, and i use the elliptical like a mad woman.... so my legs are banging..... if the rest of me looked like them, i wouldn't have a problem.....

Hi, apple here. The ONLY effective thing I've found that reduces my midsection is reducing my carbs. :/ So i feel your pain girl. Its really frustrating to have my pants be baggy in the *kitten* and still wear the same size lol.
