Question on intermittent fasting

There was a very informative TV programme last night, and I know many here are proponents of the IF regime. I'm actually keen to give this a bash. I know I can drink water and tea - I've already had a coffee with a little milk this morning but nothing else - is that it scrapped for the day? It seems that 2 days per week is optimum, would you agree?

Any tips would be welcome, thanks!

The TV programme talked about intermediate calorie reduction rather than full IF. With IF you would avoid calorie containing drinks usually, so black coffee perhaps.

The intermittent reduction on the TV was 500 cals / 30g protein two days per week. It was aimed at reducing IGF for health, the weight loss was incidental and not optimised.

Thanks Yarwell - do you do IF? If so, what would you suggest?

I'm contemplating it. As it happens I did it Monday and Tuesday for other reasons (endoscopy yesterday).

The guy on Horizon chooses to eat a small breakfast so he isn't hungry in the morning. He's busy at work so doesn't notice the lack of food.

I ate first in mid afternoon.

I would try two days a week for starters. Maybe two weekdays so you're not constrained socially at the weekend ? Mon and Weds, Tues and Thurs etc

    ETA - there's an IF group http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/49-intermittent-fasting

I am not currently doing it but I have in the past. I've done 8/16 meaning eat during an 8 hour window, fast for 16. The idea is to keep your body in a fasted state and using fat stores for energy for a longer period. The coffee would be fine but the milk would kick in a small insulin reaction which would be self defeating. The idea is to have no insulin response shuttling energy to the body so that it has to pull from fat stores.
