what to expect from your first counselling session?

Haven't been to one since 6 years ago, but my teacher is practically forcing me to see one some time within the next week.

What should I expect? :/ What should I tell them? Will they ask me questions or just expect me to talk?

The first counselling session is typically: a short 'get to know you' session, they will tell you about privacy and confidentiality (will probably get you to sign something) and it's limits (needing to report if you are at risk of harming yourself or others, or committed a serious crime), they may ask you if you've seen a counsellor before and what was it like, they'll ask what brought you to see a counsellor but shouldn't go into detail - they will probably just ask for what the issue is and explain that you won't go into a huge amount of detail in the first session but if you agree to future sessions that's when it will take place.

hope that helped. good luck, and good on you for taking the first step. counselling is hard, and most if not all people are nervous during their first session.

It depends on the counselor. But, generally, they'll want to get some background info on you, what the issue is that brought you there, etc. You're the one who guides the sessions, so it'll be however you make it :)

It should be noted that each counselor is different. I've been to 3 and all were totally different.

Basically what everyone above said. First session is usually a "getting to know you" thing. Also, remember that you can try a different counselor if the first one you see isn't right for you.
