Sodium Intake

How much sodium do you guys restrict yourself to? I eat a lot of microwavable meals and the sodium is killing me. Also, what do you suggest as a fresh and healthy alternative to a microwavable meal?

I quit most processed foods and don't add salt to my cooking. My sodium intake is pretty low but not so low that it disrupts my electrolyte balance.

ETA: The alternative to microwave meals is cooking fresh food every day, making extra so you can divide up portions and freeze them for another day and planning your grocery shopping around a meal plan so you don't run out of options halfway through the week.

Sounds overwhelming but it's really not.

I only allow myself 1200 mg a day. I removed all processed foods from my diet as well.

Sodium used to kill me every single day! You have to cut out those meals. Cook in a crockpot and you will have leftovers for a few days.

Most resources I've found recommend sodium intake between 1500-2300. I try to stay as close to the low end of that as I can, but I also have high blood pressure. The top end of that is fine for people who don't suffer any ill effects.
  • I can only really repeat what everyone else has said. Without cutting out all those processed foods it's really hard to achieve. Most people use microwave meals for cost and convenience, but the truth is most home cooked meals end up being cheaper per serving as well as taking 10 minutes or less. The key is to not add even more salt to these meals. A lot of people reach for the salt before they even taste anything. Personally I prefer the taste of food over the taste of salt, but this may not concern you. From your post it sounds like you already know the problem and the solution. Don't be afraid to go for it!
  • Thank you! I'm going to try to incorporate more fresh/non processed food into my diet!

I don't restrict myself as far as sodium is concerned....because I eat fresh and healthy meals 99% of the time....so I don't have to worry. Cook ahead, make fave recipes healthier...anything frozen and packaged is most likely packed with it...so avoid them if sodium is your concern.
