Has anyone had good success with the South Beach Diet? Is it something you can stay on long term as in a lifestyle change?

I had tremendous success with South Beach Diet. Several years ago I lost 50 lbs. with it, but gained back 20 when I got off track. In following that diet, you don't track portions or calories and that's why I think MFP is working so well for me. The accountability and knowing for sure how many calories I'm eating has been a big help this time. I still apply many South Beach Diet principals to the way I eat and credit that way of eating with helping me get much healthier. Especially paying attention to the glycemic index and aiming to eat protein with carbs. If I ever feel confident to quit tracking calories in the future,, the basis of the South Beach Diet principals will guide me. Actually , the South Beach Diet is really more of a healthy lifestye than a diet!0

Most diets have some sort of angle they work in the health scene, but they usually go overboard (Yeah, it's the tomato and lettuce in that big mac that got you fat).
The reality is that it IS simply calories in vs calories out. What you eat can also determine calories out (protein!).
Creating healthy eating habits is far far far more valuable than simply following a fad diet.
Avoid high sodium foods as well as processed foods.
If you have to follow a "diet", you won't succeed long term.0 -
I did really well on it a couple of years ago, too. I felt great. The problem I had was that as soon as I starting adding some of the healthy carbs back into my daily routine - some cravings started coming back. Carbs have always been my weakness - and as soon as I fell off the train - I had a really hard time getting back on. I know plenty of people who have lived on South Beach for years and continue to be successful. Good luck on your journey!0

YES & YES !
I don't consider it a "diet" ...... it's a common sense way of eating, with emphasis on veggies ..... I started 3 years ago & lost 40 lbs ...... SB doesn't count calories, but calories do count, and that's where MFP comes in ..... now I've lost even more weight ...... and am motivated to get some exercise each day ...... works for me :drinker:0 -

I get where danadark is coming from, but counting calories IS a diet in a sense.0 -
South beach diet has influenced much of my eating over the years and I think it has some good guidelines on healthy eating. I say go for it.0

For me the main principle of South Beach are not really a diet but common sense. If you look at the foods that are of low glycemic index you'll realize that they are simply healthy. I am pretty much eating low glycemic index foods and tracking calories here. You can't go wrong this way.0

I had great success until I got off track. When I started over this year using mfp I started folling 80% South Beach principles and 20% calories and allowed some more sugar. It's working for me again. And using those concepts I'm never hungry.0

I tend to follow South Beach eating ideas most of the time. I learned a lot about carbs and balancing my eating. It is an eating plan that is easy to follow for life as a life change. I lost weight, felt good and enjoyed it. Health issues drove me crazy with mood and weight swings and I drfited away from it but I'm working my way into following the plan again.0
