Losing faster than expected - Normal?

I've been tracking calories and exercise for the last 10 days and have lost 8 pounds so far (from 215 to 207). I have been generally on or a little under the target calories every day and have certainly done more exercising than I used to but certainly not a crazy amount. (4 20-30 minute elliptical sessions plus a lot of walking and playing drums)

Is losing a lot the first week or so normal and what should I expect for my next 10 days?

it's just water weight. don't worry, it should slow down once you start having to burn fat. then you'll be like "what happened?!!!!?!" and wish it were like that again :) ahahaha!

Agreed. Just adopt a diet and exercise plan and stick to it! Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    This^^^^

But I would add it is STILL an accomplishment and it still counts. Good luck on the beginning of your journey!

Keep in mind the bigger you are the more weight you'll lose but as it falls off you'll be slowing down just dont get discouraged once it slows a bit

I lost 11 pounds of (I assume) water weight in my first week, then it went down to 8 pounds, then 5 pounds, then 4 pounds. Somebody told me they call it your "junk food weight" that comes off quickly when you are obese and first start restricting your calories. Off to a great start, now keep it up. Welcome to MFP!

Somebody posted a pie graph on another thread recently (one about eating exercise calories back). I don't remember the specific percentages, but it was a good visual to show how much weight lost in the first, second, third week etc belong to water, fat, and muscle. It is predominately water in the first week, less so in the second week. Eventually all weight loss will be mostly fat, but some will be muscle as well.
