I believe it's just a personal preference. There might by some truth to getting a more full feeling by eating slowly as it might allow chemical signals to reach your brain etc, etc, yada yada yada. *shrug*

I find that eating slowly encourages you to be more mindful about what you're eating. I also get more enjoyment out of my meals that way. Scarfing down a 400-calorie sandwich in three minutes isn't as enjoyable for me as taking longer to really enjoy it.

On the run right now but numerous studies have suggested eating slow is better. You tend not to eat as much and get fuller faster. Same thing with eating off smaller plates. It is all about convincing your mind and body that you are full.

My husband eats like the Tazmanian Devil would, super fast. Compared to that, I do eat slowly, but so would 99% of the people out there.

I think so. I think if you eat faster, you will lose weight faster.

Myself, I'm a slow and dainty eater.

The reason it's said that people who eat more slowly and take smaller bites are thinner is because they generally eat smaller portions. The reason for that is a little complicated to explain, but I'll make an effort -- whichever rate you eat, fast or slow, your stomach becomes full after the same amount of food. However, your brain/body doesn't yet recognize that it's full and it won't for another few minutes, so you keep eating after that point. The faster you eat, the more food you consume after the "full" point before your body recognizes, "Oh, hey, wait, I'm full now! Time to stop eating." People who eat more slowly may still consume some after the body is full, but they consume less food in the time it takes their brain/body to catch up to that realization than someone who eats quickly.

I like to eat relatively slowly. I can make my 6 oz Greek yogurt last for about 20 minutes--especially if I put chia seeds in it. I like when they gel up--they help me feel fuller longer, too. I think there is truth to the fact that eating slowly allows your stomach to communicate a feeling of satiety to your brain, so you are less likely to overeat. I heard that it takes about 20 minutes for that to occur.

I don't have anything scientific to add, but from personal experience, my sister, who has always been thin, eats much slower than me. I will be done eating and looking for more to eat, when she is about 1/4 of the way through her food. This was always a problem for me at restaurants that had things to eat on the table, like chips and salsa, because I would then polish those off while waiting for her.

I think that there might be truth to it. I have heard that it takes your body like 20 minutes to get the "im full" message from the brain to stop eating. Thats great if you take at least 20 minutes to finish a meal. But if you anything like my boyfriend, its more like 3 minutes. So then it wouldnt really work.... That and if youre like me I ignore the I'm full message so that makes that theory not work either.

But then again I know a few overweight people that eat incredibly slow.

It takes me at least an hour to eat lunch b/c I'm too busy typing to all you lovelies to lift the fork to my mouth.... and I'm not thin, so that whole concept is bogus.

I eat ridiculously fast...like finish my lunch in literally 3min or less kind of fast. You'd think someone was going to take my food away by the rate I eat. I portion out my food and if I'm still hungry, I make sure I wait a while so my body can catch up to the food and I can tell if I'm really still hungry, otherwise with my fast eating I'll eat too much and feel disgustingly full soon after.

I am an extremely slow eater. I think some of it relates to 'why' you eat. We had one of those 'know your style and your co-worker's' tests years ago at work. One of the questions was do you eat because you are hungry or do you eat for the experience. It was a 1-10 scale thing. It got me thinking. I am a very slow eater because I LOVE food (which is also why I am here on MFP!). I eat for the flavor and enjoyment much more than simply because it's 12:00 and time for lunch. If I eat quickly, I miss out on all the fun!
