Becoming Vegan or Vegetarian

I am increasingly eating less and less meat over time. I just don't enjoy it as much as I used to and I also feel like I have more energy since eating less meat and more veggies, fruits, beans and lentils. Is there a book or website that you would suggest for me to read on veganism and one on vegetarianism? I am just not sure if I can go without my low fat dairy, I love it so much!

Thanks :)

Almond milk has a lot of calcium in it, well depending on what brand you buy. Cows milk is fortified with calcium.

    Good link.

Do some research yourself and don't listen to people tell you anything negative. I was a vegan for years and am cutting back on meat again now. Most people get so defensive about meat it's crazy. I have always thought cow milk was gross anyway.

We do not need meat to survive and be healthy. People will argue and tell you otherwise so stick to your own research and scientific facts. Ignore others. Americans eat more meat than anyone else and look how fat and unhealthy we are as a nation. If you want to give it up or cut back that's great. My advice would be to stay away from the fake meats and stuff, they are expensive and full of fat. I always suggest staying away from any substitute, experiment with different real foods til you find some things you love.

I already do almond milk, love the stuff way more than cows milk! Are their alternatives for yogurt and cheese? They are my ones I am afraid to part with :( Yes, people are very defensive about meat. So strange, it is almost like with religion when people get super defensive about it. I have been researching and it just seems vegan is healthier.

There are soy cheeses and yogurts. Kind of expensive. The cheeses aren't bad. I eat regular cheese but have cut back. I'm trying to find a good alternative myself. I didn't care for the yogurt. There are not many places around here to shop for stuff like that like though.

I like cheese a lot. I thought there was some in the fridge yesterday but my son had finished it off. I just thought to myself how nice of him to remove some fat for me. lol.

I am going to give this a try. Maybe add some maple syrup and vanilla bean extract!

Personally I find the concept of vegan yogurt strange. The whole point of eating yogurt is to get the probiotics and good bacteria. You can mimic the texture of anything and make it vegan, but it defeats the point with yogurt.

A person would have to eat tons of yogurt to really have any benefits from the probiotics. I asked the nurse for a diflucan pill last time I had antibiotics and she told me to eat yogurt. The doctor came back in and said there isn't enough in yogurt to really make a difference. It's only advertised to be so great for sales. There were lawsuits over it and the yogurt companies had to stop making claims about the uses.

It's not bad for you but eating yogurt is not going to cure anything unless you can manage to down a few gallons a day.

alpro soya vanilla yogurt is so yummy. I ate it before I was vegetarian and didn't even taste the difference.

Its the vegan cheese that seems odd to me. I've never tried it because it's way too expensive!

Facebook has a good Vegetarian page. I'm only a part-time vegetarian, but I've found some great ideas and recipes on there...

I've had to give up beef/red meat almost entirely. Took 30 years, but I finally figured out it was what was making my face break out with zits...(too many hormones in the beef!!!) I stick to chicken and fish, occasionally pork. Lately, I'm juice-fasting, so no meat (or solid food) at all until the weekends... And I'm feeling fantastic and finally dropping the pounds!

If you have a Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Sprouts, or Central Market you should be able to find some vegan cheese. I recommend Daiya the most. Vegan cheese is kind of hit or miss with people. Try a few different types until you find something you like. You should be able to find vegan yogurt in any of those shops too, I believe.
