One stick thanksgiving challenge

So I just realized thanksgiving is right around the corner, eep. Well last year between the whole thanksgiving meal and desserts, I went through 8 sticks of butter! I had no idea how bad it was. This year I want to keep the whole meal under one stick of butter. Any suggestions for keeping it under control . I want to still cook mashed potatoes, dressing, all the good stuff, just in a healthier way without killing my diet.

Ah, so the MFP thanksgiving freakout starts early this year0

I say toss the whole stick in the taters. At least SOMETHING will taste fantastic. You never mentioned how many people you are feeding. That could make a difference.0

only do this if you never want to host thanksgiving again.0 -
Never hosting again would be a great side effect, I am the only one who can cook. So I always get stuck hosting. Feeding about 25, half kids half adults. P0

ETA: I'm sorry, it's just WAAYY too early for me to face the fact that summer is almost over. :sad:0 -

Yeah, we appeared to have totally skipped the Halloween candy freakouts entirely this year.0 -

Yogurt is also a good substitute in mashed potatoes: http://www.food.com/recipe/low-fat-yogurt-mashed-potatoes-103776
For baked goods, there are a lot of desserts that don't include butter. Most of my favorite recipes do but I'll try to remember to take a peek in the recipe box when I get home.
You could make an effort to use more good fats as well, such as olive oil. In my opinion, butter's fine as long as you're not eating tons of it. If 8 sticks of butter went into 1 day of food for 4 people, then yeah...I'd make some adjustments. But if 8 sticks of butter went into food that fed 16 people over 3 days, I wouldn't worry.0 -

Wait, were you feeding 25 last year as well? Averaging out to about 2.5T of butter per person for all the food? If so, I think 8 sticks is reasonable.0 -
"kortney, how much butter do you use making candy for Christmas?"
ten pounds. TEN POUNDS OF BUTTER. And you know what?? People wait all year for my candies. It's the holidays, FFS.0 -
Take the day off from your diet. There...was that so hard? One day of munching out is not going to really do a ton of damage...especially if you don't go nuts on portion sizes...even if you do...still not that big a deal for one day.0

Just eat!!!
Then when you *kitten*, go eat again!!!
It's one day!!!!
Butter it all>>>>>>>>>>>>>
And you better make PIE!!!!!0 -
This reminds me, I'm out of Kerrygold butter...and I personally go through about a pound of it every four to five days. Dagnabbit! Guess I'll have to blend coconut oil into my morning coffee this weekend instead.
...not happy...
Oh, and stop stressing out about one day in November three months in advance. Seriously, this kind of behavior is likely far more detrimental than consuming a few hundred (or even thousand) extra calories one day.0 -
YES!!! I just spit water out of my mouth!!!!!
TOO FREAKIN' HILARIOUS!!!!0 -

Please don't. Caloriewise you won't save anything. And margarine isn't any healthier than butter (some, including myself, would argue it's less so). Butter is where it's at.0 -

Got any recipes you care to share? I'm just getting into making candy and finally got over my fear of hot caramel
And I agree...enjoy days like thanksgiving and get back on your calorie goals after. I spend nearly every thanksgiving in the south with family who REALLY know how to cook and ear. I will be eating lots of tasty, calorie laden, fatty and amazing foods and loving every moment of it. Then I'll get back to my raw veggies, whole grains, etc0 -
