Question About Meeting Calorie Min

Hello,

Wow my first post here. hello everyone.

Ok something strange has been going on and I'm getting a bit worried. About 3 weeks ago I completley changed. Going from a 5000+ cal no exercise diet to 1200 cal and moderate exercise. I had myself at 1400 till Monday of last week then pulled myself down to 1200 because I felt I could do it.

This from the woman who was ALWAYS hungry is now having issues consuming my minimum calories because I'm full. I've never once starved myself and am trying to meet my min of 1,200.

I think this is due to the fact I am choosing lower calorie/bigger portion meals such as salads and high fibre options and I'm just filling up fast.

Any suggestions how to meet minimums without eating junk and if anyone else has experienced this?

Thanks,

Meg

Choose some calorie dense foods - avocado, olive oil, nut butter, nuts. If your dairy is non-fat - eat 2% or more.

You just need to eat more. 1200 is the absolute minimum for anyone. If your only getting 1200 calories, chances are you are lacking nutrition.......If you don't eat enough protein and your exercising, your body will start to break down your muscles and feed on them. In return, your weight loss will not be fat loss but instead will be muscle loss. When your trying to lose weight, this is the last thing you want to do. The more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism is which means the more fat your burn. Contrary to popular belief, your body needs fat. But you want to avoid trans fat. Trans fat is found in packaged processed foods. And too much of anything is not a good thing. You also need carbs. Your carbs come from grains, fruit, and vegetables. So basically, I'm saying you need to look at your food diary and see where your lacking proper nutrition and eat your calories from the food your missing out on.

Also, are you setting the 1200 calories or did MFP set this based off your current weight? Most people think the least amount of calories means the quicker the weight loss which usually makes their body go into starvation mode. If your body thinks your starving yourself, it will hold onto to everything and will not allow you to lose weight.
  • You don't need to force yourself to meet any minimum calorie requirement. People on MFP like to tout "starvation mode", but most of them don't understand what it actually means. That said...you need to be very careful that you're fueling your workouts (ie. don't be that person who passes out the stationary bike because they haven't eaten that day) and that you're getting adequate nutrition. Most warnings about not going below 1200 (no idea why this seems to be the magic number, those numbers change based on your body type) are more for the sake of not risking malnutrition.

FYI my favorite article on starvation mode and how it actually works is here:

I'm not starving myself in the slightest and I'm usually OVER on my protein. Trying to eat a balanced diet of course. I'll make a HUGE salad and then only be able to eat like 3/4 of it and the salad to begin with was 200 Cal or less. Today I had a spoonful of peanut butter with it to help gain calories with something good for me.

Needless to day by the end of today this is how it looked:

    Totals 1,154 183 34 49
    Your Daily Goal 1,395 191 46 52
    Remaining 241 8 12 3
    Calories Carbs Fat Protein
*You've earned 195 extra calories from exercise today

I don't kill myself on the exercise either, though today I pulled a calf muscle. The most I'll usually do is 30 min of a very very very brisk pace and 15 min stretching. Funny thing is my tastes have changed so much! The roomate and I both went to Timmies for a doughnut as a treat one night and I really don't like my old favorite anymore. I found it way too sweet.

I think the best thing to do is hit Bulk Barn for some pistachios and other nuts. High calorie good fats for very little so even if I don't feel too hungry I can manage a handful or so.

    What do you guys think?
  • Pistachios and cashews are my snack of choice at work. You have to be REALLY careful with portions (cashews especially add up fast) but they give you lots of energy :)

This is the most common question asked by people on a low fat diet... add healthy fats
