Hey all, I eat this stuff every day and am wondering the best way to get the measurements. Apparently I've read that when it's raw it weighs more so when it's cooked it weighs less. So apparently I may of been consuming more than what I've wanted to consume.
Any help how to figure this stuff out would be appreciated. It would be easier to not weigh the raw chicken and then divide the portions in the tray but sounds like that may need to be done.

It weighs less when it is cooked bc u are draining the water from it. The nutrition facts are based on the raw product. Keep weighing it raw.0 -

I always measure cooked because that is what my dietician said.0

I've been weighing it cooked. Should I keep doing that or switch to what it actually could be? I was getting results doing what I was doing. Now I heard that you should weigh it raw but it completely confuses me because if I cook it frozen then the amount of weight it loses varies.0

Yes, but say if the chicken's nutrition goes by the frozen state. If I put it in at 12 oz, it can come out of the oven as 8oz. So, I'd actually be eating 12oz worth of chicken?0 -
Weigh it frozen, and that's what you put on MFP and then don't weigh it again after its cooked. You're just confusing yourself0

I usually eat my chicken at 4.5oz at a time but not sure how many cals that would be. Each piece of chicken goes for about 10-12oz frozen.0 -
Whoa, I've been weighing the cooked portion. It never occurred to me to weigh the raw or frozen portions...that's something to think about.0

I guess it depends on how you're cooking it because when I weigh out 5 oz raw or frozen it doesn't shrink at drastically as everyone is saying on here. It might go down to 4 oz at the lowest. But like I said, I weigh it raw/frozen and use that as my weight for measuring calories0

In the food database when you enter your chicken or for that mater any other protein you can select chicken raw vs chicken cooked. Which ever way you measure is the way you record.0

Had that issue before. Pay attention to what MFP says. I had a steak the other day and I put it in, MFP said the serving size was 5 oz cooked.
I bet some other things will say frozen or not cooked and if it doesn't say anything, then just keep doing the way you were. You were losing and keeping track just fine before, so I wouldn't worry about it0 -
Instead of using the information on the package you could always just use MFP's data for cooked chicken breast since it's only boneless, skinless chicken breast, correct?
4.5 oz is equal to about 127g. If you set it at the 100 grams option and put it as 1.27 servings it comes out to 198 calories a serving. Sound about right to you?0 -

With stuff like frozen chicken breast though the brand makes a big difference for sodium content, although I guess if the idea is that you're cooking the liquids out...I dunno. This is throwing me for a loop, lol!0 -

I did another experiment.
Tray 1: 9.9oz FROZEN, 8.6oz RAW, and then it came out at 6.3oz COOKED
Tray 2: 10.0oz FROZEN, 9oz RAW, and then it came out 6.1oz COOKED
So, I just go by the raw weight and not the frozen, even though it came as frozen? Wondering cause on the nutritional label, it says there's 40 servings per container and it's a 10lb bag of chicken. I'm wondering if the only way it'd be 40servings is if it were frozen.
My cals are really fudged up cause Idk what to do about this. I can't seem to wrap my head around this.

Here is what I do. I get a big pack of fresh chicken breasts at WM 1.99 a pound here. I cut up the breasts into pieces so they are easier to cook and weigh. I weigh them out into servings one per ziploc, put in my maranade and then freeze those. I pull out the bag the night before to defrost in the fridge and it is ready to make the next night.0

You weigh meat raw because that's what the calories on the package are based off of (unless you're buying cooked chicken).
Take a 6oz chicken breast, which is 180 calories. Cook it, you can either:
1. cook it just to safe temp, leaving it still juicy and moist and it will weigh around 5oz
2. overcook it so it's drier inside and it will weigh around 4-4.5oz
When you eat either 1 or 2, you are still eating 180 calories because all you've lost is water and a few natural juices.
But if you were to weigh it cooked, option 1 would have you entering 150 and option 2 will have you entering 120-135 calories.
Which is also why you don't want to use the entries for cooked meats either, since one persons 4oz may be different than another's based on the length of cooking time for the meat.0
