Rant: Tour de Cure

I signed up, only $25. They want you to fund raise. No, they REALLY want you to fund raise. The minimum is $200. It's not a suggestion, it's a requirement. I went to pick up my package today, as the ride is next week. Since I haven't gotten online credit card funds, the worker pushed a CREDIT CARD authorization in my face. I think they're sneaky. They have their $25 before I know the real cost is $225. The mailing said I needed to get $200 to get the t shirt. No, I need the extra $200 to get my bib. Jerks.

Yikes! I would probably fail that task. I don't know anyone who I'd feel comfortable asking for money from.
  • Are you really ranting against a charity event designed to raise money for research and education?

^I dont think the rant is focused on the fact that it's money going to a charity, but it seems like he was only planning on paying $25 and that was the "donating"...alot of people don't have $225 to donate to a charity so he was just trying to the best he could by donated and participating in the race for $25. And clearly it said to get a shirt was $200, which he didn't want or have the money for, but when he showed up essentially told him he was paying the $200 to be able to participate. I wouldn't have been prepared to pay the $200 for it and would have been a bit upset. I dont think he's upset at where it's going, I think he's upset because he was caught off guard. I would have been.
  • When I went to register for the tour de cure, the registration site clearly states there is a minimum fundraising goal (the site says $150). I get the fact it can stink to have to pay a lot of money (if you don't fundraise) to participate in a ride, but the $25 pays for the tour and not the cure. His fault for not reading before paying the $25.

The word "goal" does not imply that it's mandatory. I hope the money is going to a good cause. I haven't used their services, but think I ought to investigate, since I'm prediabetic. I just was thinking that it fit, made sense, to attend a diabetes awareness event b/c of my status and b/c the very nature of the event helps fight it. Now I feel VERY imposed upon. An event should just cost $X, then any fundraising on top is icing on the cake, so to speak.
