Will I still be Alyssa if I lose weight?

I wanted to bring this up because I think it's the main thing that has held me back from really committing to weight loss in the past. I have been overweight for as long as I can remember. I feel like my weight is part of my identity, and I know for a fact that it has helped shape the person I am today(no pun intended). The problem is, I rather like who I am, I just don't like how I look/my health. I am afraid that if I lose weight I will change as a person, and I won't be 'Alyssa' anymore.

Do any of you share this fear also? Is there anyone who began with this fear and lost the weight anyways, and if so how do you feel now? I would love to hear your viewpoints on this.

In my opinion you will be the same Alyssa only a better and healthier you. At least that is true for me. I think the only things that really changed about myself is the fact that I am more confident and open with people. Before I was shy and in the background. Losing weight changes the people around you more than it changes you, because people react differently to you when you lose weight. One example that drives me 'crazy' is guys will hold open store doors for me now... never before did that ever happen.

I had more of the issue of becoming angry with people, because people that didn't know me before treated me differently than people had before. It caused a really big platue for me (about 6 months), but I got over the anger and am happier for it now.

I know that I will be the same, but more confidently so.
  • Is it because you feel that people judge you because of your weight when they weigh less than you and you don't want to become that person? Or any of the other things associated negatively with being smaller?
If you're a good person at heart, you can never change. If you aren't losing weight for a negative reason it wont turn you into a negative person.
Think of how much more awesome you can give to other people when you have the energy :)

    You will still be you.

I think a lot of us assume that if we lose weight that suddenly people with like us more or that we will magically become funnier or prettier or more confident or sexier or become the girl who drives along in an open top car with her hair flying behind in the breeze... or something!
Chances are that most of those things won't happen - although they might, I never rule anything out!

What wil happen is that when you become healthier and feel better about yourself (inside and outside), that can affect how you interact with people and what you want to do (or are able to do) and provide new opportunities that you didn't have before - and that's a really positive thing.

Just take it a step at a time. Make healthy changes in your life for YOU. You can't be doing this for anyone else.
Enjoy the things that happen along the way - but don't worry that you won't be Alyssa - you aren't going anywhere!!

Thank you everyone for your encouragement! I'm still unsure about it, but I know that I will be a lot healthier when I lose weight and I guess that's what really matters! I'll just have to trust in myself and see what happens =)

How you look and your health is part of being you. So if you don't like that, there is something about you that you don't like. I don't know you so I obviously cant say for sure but maybe you're just unconsciously making excuses to not do the work and get results because it is hard work. Of course you'll be a little different, but I guarantee it'll be for the better. There cannot possibly be any negative effects to getting healthier.
