i'm currently 280lbs with a goal weight of 160 (adjust dependin how i feel lose some more once i get there..) I'm wondering what my calorie intake should be at to lose weight. my calculated BMR is 2065 and i have my calorie currently intake to 2050 per day with 7 days/ 30 min exercise.

In the last 3 months i have gone from 2000- 1800-- down to 1560 for calories for about 3week period hoping for a big change on the scale like 3lbs a week. I'm thinking for my weight it should be melting off and its not. my macros are currently set to carbs and protein 40% and fat %20%.

I would love to be losing minimum of 2lbs a week but for the past 3 months its been mostly 1/2 lb - 1lb. once a 3.5 pound which i think was mostly water weight. Any suggestions? What should my calories be at to lose more weight. When i was at 1560 recently i was fine, felt great. Didn't feel like i was out of energy and even being at 1800-2000 i have never been able to actually eat it in a full day. i have been eating 5 times a day.

I just don't undestand why i'm not losing more weight, especially with being at 1560cal / day-- could it be that my body thinks i'm going into starvation mode?

thanks

    Hi BB,
I'm similar to you in weight, and I've been struggling since I got married 5 years ago. And then I had 2 kids!!

While I was PG with my son, who was born this past February, my husband joined Jenny Craig and lost 25 pounds (cruel, I know!). I didn't think it would be for me because I'm not too keen on just eating packaged food, but I decided to give it a shot about a month ago, and it's working remarkedly well! I've lost 12.7 pounds already, and I'm liking it. Right now I'm on 1700 calories, and I work out almost every day, so I get a chance to add those calories back in. So far, being on JC, I've learned to eat frequently, and add in a lot of fruits and veggies. I eat 4 fruits a day, unlimited veggies (salad with every meal, and more). And I haven't gotten sick of the frozen meals like I thought I would. And portion control is the most important thing in the world. I was always eating way too much because I didn't know what a proper portion was. But I'm learning.

I just recieved some pictures from a friend of mine from last weekend, and I wanted to cry. I'm so unhappy with my weight. I don't want to be an embarrassment for my kids. My goal is also 160, because that's the upper end of "healthy" for me, which I want to be by the time I turn 40 in January 2014. That's where I was through HS and college, and was very comfortable. I'm determined!

Have you ever looked into visiting a nutritionist? Maybe through your Doctor? It's helping me!

Keep at it...I'll help when I can!

Everyone loses weight at different paces. Just focus on making good healthy food choices and working out it will come off. I often get really frustrated but remember it took awhile to put it on it's going to take awhile to take it off. I lost my first 20 lbs in the first month but now have tapered way off.

Eating at your BMR level is a great place to start. The weight should come off fine at that point. Don't go for less... it won't necessarily go faster and could just mess up your hormones instead.

Really... 2050 is a good place to start... or 2000 if you like round numbers. If you add on significant workouts, you should eat a little more. Not necessarily all your workout calories, but some if you're hungry. 2000 calories should be pretty sustainable and would likely take you to a place where you're a healthy weight and maintaining on 2000 calories daily.
