So for those of you who own an HRM, what kind do you have and where did you buy it? What is the average price as well? TIA

I also have an FT4, and I love it. I purchased it at a sporting goods store, 2 years ago it cost me around $80 on sale.

Suunto ambit combined with movescount.com = best purchase for fitness ever. About $500 but worth every penny. Logs everything and downloads to computer for a great analysis tool.

Polar FT60 (does workout schedules and calculates proxy for VO2max) $127.48 (Amazon.com)
No GPS (I use treadmill and elliptical only, so don't need it).

    I'm happy with the purchase.

I use the Polar RS400. I got it as a gift.
It has a lot of features I use for training intervals and speed and distance. Also a VO2 feature to test your basic fitness level on set up, to give a more accurate burn.
However decide what you need from the HRM and how technological you are. If its just to log calories expended and stay in the right heart rate zone then get the basic model its easier to set up and use daily.
If you want to use it as a training device invest in a model with more features.

Polar is a good brand and gives reliable data feedback provided you set it up properly with your details.
Don't get something that is too hard to set up and operate as you will never use it !!!

Garmin Edge 800, Garmin Forerunner 405 - biking and running tools, GPS top notch - useless in the gym.

Polar FT7, FT4, S725 - The s725 was the best but it is kaputt (7 years of loyal service including -30°C trekking), FT7 is like the FT4 but allows link up to computer. These are good for the gym and pretty good for other sports - the algo is purely cardio and parameter based and not distance -- good.

    Best HRM depends on use.

I have the Sportline Duo 1010w. It was about $70. Works great! I can even wear the watch part in the pool if I want. Just wish the chest strap was waterproof. But it does what its supposed to do.

Honestly I have a Sportline S7 from walmart. It does not have the part that goes around your chest it is only the watch. It obviously is not 100% accurate but is very close. Also it only takes your information on age and gender not weight. So since I am overweight I burn MORE calories then it tells me which I dont complain about haha. But it cost me about 30$ and I use it as a watch at work. It has the timer for how long you worked out and how many calories you burned. I wear it the opposite way you would wear a watch when I am working out with the actual base on the bottom of my wrist to get a better reading. It also has a light. A chronographer and a timer that counts down. For my budget it was good enough for me.

It depends what you want it for and what you want it to "do". I have a Polar RS300x which is an exceptional mid range HRM. You can add on components such as speed and GPS sensors for even more data analysis. It's great as its multisport, robust, has a built in fit test and shows calories burned at the end, but your HR throughout (as opposed to at fixed intervals) and you can upload the data using a flowlink to polar personal trainer providing you with a great trend of your performance. Costs about £100 for the HRM watch and chest strap. Modules thereafter cost about £40 each but I don't bother with them as I track my GPS routes with Nike+ when running inside and outside using my iPhone, Endomondo when cycling outdoors. You can buy HRMs which link up with your iPhone and various apps making better use of those apps. x
