I started heavy lifting and I understand I need a rest day to allow muscles to recover and repair..but is it ok to do some cardio on that rest day? Any advice would be appreciated

  • Yes My workout weeks consist of

Monday, Wednesday, Friday lifting full body workout.
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday Couch 2 5 k Treadmill and maybe 15 mins stationary bike.

    Sunday full rest day.

Your body will tell you when and if you need more rest listen to you body and only go up 5-10 pounds per week of weights while lifting any other than that you will hurt yourself.

I am by no means a professional just giving my .02 of what works for me.

    Good luck.

Yes, go right ahead. Do go run 10+ miles or something, but the off day cardio will make it easier to hit your calorie goal on your off days.

Some cardio is fine for now, If I do cardio it's only one day a week. When the weights get heaver and heaver, you'll find yourself able to do less cardio. Your muscles need time to repair themselves after each session. I lift on Tue, Thur, Sat and normally just walk or jog a bit on Sundays.

If you find yourself unable to meet your next lifting goals, back off the cardio a bit.

As much cardio as you can do without hindering muscle recovery is fine. When I was cutting I did 60 min 3mph on tue\thur just to get away from my desk for an hour and still burn some cals.

In the gym, I do every-day strength training (divided into lower, than upper body every-other-day, each, Cybex Eagle machine workouts), and everyday cardio as a warm-up (at least).

I also try to go out and run/bike/walk in the evenings every-other-day, if I can.

Not sure if this "is recommended" - but it makes sense to me.
