Intermittent Jogging?

I just started to run/jog for the first time since a car accident in 09 so Its more of a walk then jog for a small burst. So I was wondering what I should log it as?For example, today I did this for 55 minutes and when I was walking it was between 3.0 and 3.5, and each spurt of jogging probably lasted less than a minute. So should I just go ahead and log it as walking 3.5? I know getting a HRM would be easier but I cant afford one right now so any help would be appreciated:)

I don't know if this is the right answer or not, but this is what I do. On my short days, I walk 3 minutes (at 4.7 mph) then run 90 seconds (at 5.7 mph). On my longer days, I walk 4 minutes and run 1. Both of these I log as walks even though I can be close to 5 mph overall since I am walking 66% or 80% of the time. Once the running part gets to more than 50%, I will log it as running...and I really look forward to the day that happens!

I vote for logging it as walking for now.

Obviously you're logging the start and end times for your work out. I check the time when I leave the house. Then I use my iPod to time my run spurts and just subtract my run time from the total time (taken when i get back to the house). I log the run time accordingly and the walk time with the remainder. This is what I do, the battery in my HRM is impossible to replace....

If your MPH averages to a running pace then log running if not log as a fast walk.

Either log it as a faster walk (depending on how much you actually job and how fast) or just log it as walking.

When I was doing that, I usually logged it as walking 4.5mph (I walked @ 4.0mph and ran @ 6.0mph. I walked more than I ran).

If you know your total distance walked, you can calculate your average pace, and log that. Or use a site like mapmyrun or runkeeper (or the apps, if you have a smartphone) and it'll calculate all that for you, including an estimate on the calorie burn.
