Exercise Post Knee Surgery

Hi,

I'm 11 weeks post knee surgery (plica removal) and am still unable to exercise. The PT has told me that I can't try and resistance exercise until I am pain free.

I've gained a small amount of weight since my surgery and was wondering what I could do to burn calories and not put any stress on my knee.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Swimming, or other water based activity. For swimming if it hurts the knee you can swim only using your arms, great upper body and cardio workout.

Ask PT about cycling on a stationary bike. That is how I recovered after orthoscopic knee surgery. It burns calories but you can do it on low resistance and not put pressure on your knee.

Otherwise, how about a stability ball and hand weights? Work on that upperbody.

    Good Luck.

Also true. Some pools have belts that go around your wast so you can focus on your uppper body.

Watch out about the pool exercices; swimming makes you hungry!!! There are some bikes you can use only with your arms. Also, set ups and some floor exercices could be good. Ask a physiotherapist.
  • You could also start doing upper body exercises. If you put some food cans in a plastic bag you can do curls and such while seated. Don't do any heavy resistance stuff, but a bunch of reps with light weight should be good.
