Hi...my church started their annual Daniel fast on Monday and I am very excited about it, but I was also curious as to how this would effect things for me. I do not care about my own personal loss/gain through this fast but it is a BIG change in food for me. The Daniel fast is all NATURAL, fruit, veggies, grains, nuts 100% juice (no added sugar) basically no sugar, meats, anything processed ect. I have noticed that alot of this food has high suger (fruits) and the grains, nuts is high in fat....sooo should i expect this to effect my weight ALOT? It is said to be great! for the body and we are 2 days in and I have been getting headaches...I am assuming this is my body reacting to the lack of "junk" but could really, really use some feedback. Thanks!!

  • I am going through the book of Daniel in a Beth Moore Study so I am right there with ya. I have cut out all sweets, and the only thing I eat thats sweet is cinnamon applesauce, everything else is fruits, grains, and I do eat some chicken( I need protein since I work outside the home 2 jobs) and if you slip just start back over the next day. I am drinking alot more water, and it keeps my system cleaned. The main goal for the Daniel fast though is to reduce your temptations and to get yourself in a whole different mind set, the reason they do it for such a long period of time. Your body detox takes about 28 days to rid yourself of anything, so give it a few weeks to start seeing a change. Hope this helps! God Bless.

If you aren't eating any meats, dairy or other protiens such as these you are going to need the energy and protein provided in the nuts. And sugar from fruit is fine. Its the added sugars in processed foods and juices you have to watch out for.

You could be getting headaches for several reasons or both at the same time:
    1. you aren't eating enough and drinking enough water
    2. the change in food is causing it. Going from processed foods to unprocessed can cause people issues like that, but once they pass, you will feel so much better for it.
I know when I stopped eating all the junk and went more all natural/organic etc., I felt so much better. Now when I eat fast food I feel like crap from it.

Just make sure you are drinking enough water and eating enough and I am sure in few days you will feel better. Right now your body is probably just doing wihat the Daniel Fast intended -cleansing itself of unnatural chemicals and crap.
  • I feel like I am eating all the time though lol....but it is "healthy" food...peanuts...fruit....salsa and blue corn chips...ezeicial bread...popcorn...so in 21 days will I gain a bunch? I am hoping to carry this way of eating over into my life after the fast and just add meats. This is also "clean" eating from what I have been told.

Yes, this is clean eating. Ezekial bread is full of sprouted grains which are extremely good for you. Nuts are good for you.

You could do this fast and track your cals at the same time if you are worried about gaining alot of weight. That way you don't wonder if you will or not and you will know exactly what you can have each day. Also, if you plan a week at a time it will help with your grocery shopping and such. Takes the thinking out of it on a daily basis I find. I just look at my list of options for that week, pick some and get the food. So much easier.

Just because you change what your eating doesn't mean you will gain weight. It doesn't mean that you won't either. It is all about quantity at the end of the day. Ideally if you are eating quality foods you need less in quantity. I for one wasn't sure for a long time of how much I ate until I started tracking though.

So your post about the Daniel fast intrigued me, and I went and did a google search. In reading, I found a couple of things you said you were eating that were on the foods to avoid list. The Ezekiel bread has both leavening agent (yeast) and a sweetner (honey). The corn chips that you're having with salsa... are they fried? If so, they shouldn't be eaten either. Or check for funky additves on the ingredients list, because even artificial preservatives are out.

I found a couple of very helpful sites, with recipies even, if you want them...

I wish you luck, both in your weight loss journey and in your spiritual journey as well.

I've done the Daniel fast before, when I did it I cut: meat, poultry, dairy, fat, sugar, grain & caffeine.
I ate: fruit, fish, veggies, nuts and thats about it. oh and popcorn :) I lost about 20 lbs by the end of it and felt amazing but unfortunately I didnt stick with the clean eating and gained it all back :(

Oh yeah and I had killer headaches from the caffeine withdrawal at first but by the second week those were gone! :flowerforyou:

Canola oil is allowed, but deep fried foods aren't (darn chips).

Sorry, don't mean to rain on your parade.... lol I'm actually kinda thinking about trying this myself. I'm already making myself a different meal from everyone else due to my milk and egg allergies, so it wouldn't be as if it was an inconvenience. Hmmmm...

What I did get from the sites was that the Daniel fast is flexible if you have special health needs etc. The moderator on the one site kept trying to get across to the posters was that the Daniel fast isn't just supposed to focus on food, but on God and your relationship with Him. Many of us get comfort from the foods that we eat (I know I do), and by fasting like this, we refocus ourselves to God and the comfort we can get from Him.

I'll assume that you used to drink coffee, tea, or soda on a daily basis...stopping these=killer headaches. I gave up coffee for lent about 4 years ago and I had the worst migranes of my life for about 1 week. After that week it wasn't a problem. I recently cut out coffee again and once again the headaches were back but not as severe due to my 3-4 cup a day habit 4 years ago and my recent 1 cup a day up until New Years.
The Daniel Fast (life change) is actually a really great way to cleanse yourself and bring yourself closer to Him.
I'm a vegetarian and for me I do this on an almost everyday basis...but I do eat bread....can't live without it.
