Office Treats

I work in a very small office (7 people) and people are always sharing chips, chocolate, gummies, and even beer during the day. Does anyone have any strategies to help resist the temptation? Today in a very stressful meeting I ate 300 cals just of sweets and chips. HELP!!!

    Hiya,

I feel your pain, i work in an office where every day seems to be cake day! with people bringing in treats on birthdays, to celebrate good news or for no reason what so ever, i am surrounded by bad food - and to make it worse, the cake table is situated right next to my desk.

i decided that i would only have a treat on a friday, i did this for a couple of months then i decided to stop treats all together.

Don't get me wrong, it's hard but once you have declined the amazing white chocolate cake or krispie kremes a few times, you'll soon get used to it.

Put that image in your head of how you will look once you have reached your goal weight and always keep a supply of healthy snacks with you just to control those hunger pangs when everyone else is eating something sinful.

It's a horrible feeling going without but it's a better feeling to not feel guilty about eating something you know you shouldn't have and to feel proud of yourself declining something that has about 500 cals every bite! ha ha.

    good luck!

I suffer the same problem on a daily basis - tell everyone you are trying to eat healthily and that often discourages them from offering you things.

I also find that I only give in and pig out when I get hungry - so make sure you have healthy snacks to hand if you get tempted, and drink plenty of water to fill you up a little.

I think the biggest thing is to remember that you haven't blown it if you do have a treat. We are all human, and a little bit of bad does us good. :)

Something to think about though: No cake or sweet or crisp will ever taste as good as being slim feels.
  • I know you've heard it before... we all have... (and sometimes it's easier said than done...) but keep fruit with you, fresh or dried. My favorite snack is dried cranberries or the snack packs from Sensible Foods. Nuts or dried soybeans are good too. It's hard to resist partaking in the yummy but so bad for you festivities... our lives are very social and so often food driven. Don't deprive yourself of enjoying the atmosphere, just remember to stick to your goals and if you do indulge keep it in moderation. AND remember this... keeping your eyes on your goals earns you new clothes or getting into that favorite pair of jeans or whatever it is you daydream of getting that beautiful you into... and when you do, everyone will be jealous of your additional fabulous-ness!!  :flowerforyou:
  • Thanks so much everyone! very helpful! I will try those tricks, and hopefully see some changes soon! :)

You just have to suck it up. I work with about 7 people also and our company buys whatever snacks we want and lets us have at them in the kitchen. Chips, cookies, M&Ms (ugh), etc. When it someone's bday, amazing cake balls. So hard! You just have to suck it up and say no. Plus, you have to make sure and have snacks that are healthy. If you're hungry, you're totally gonna go for the crap!

My dept has 31 people who LOVE to celebrate anything and everything as a reason to have food. I got 2 puppies a few years ago and they had a "puppy shower" for me. LOL Just yesterday there was cake, cupcakes and popcorn to celebrate the 100th usage of a new software package we bought. Really?! Anyway, since I have been on my healthier lifestyle journey, I have refrained from indulging in the sweets and snacks as much as possible. I make sure to bring my own healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, bars (I'm loving KIND bars right now!), and yogurt. I participate in the celebration, but enjoy my own snacks. Sometimes, there are healthier options offered because a lot of people in the group are trying to be healthier as well, but so far, I'm the only one who has consistently been sticking with it. I'm offered all kinds of sweets and snacks almost daily, but I refrain and keep focused on how much better I feel when I make the healthier choice.

Generally I just say "No thank you" if offered. Sometimes I'll have a very small amount if it looks yummy and I've been offered. I have my own snacks at work so I'm seldom if ever peckish so that helps me avoid. There's a lot of things like jelly beans and minitures in our area and I generally don't touch them. I might grab a special dark if I need a chocolate fix, but generally I save my chocolate for the end of the day after I've hit the gym and know what my calorie budget is.

I keep snacks at my desk, and I make sure that I never feel hungry. If I'm not even hungry, it's much easier to say no. And each time you say no, it gets easier to say it the next time.

Bring your own healthy snacks to work -- veggies/dip, beef jerky, etc.

when all else fails, just say "no." I've become that person in the office that usually always says no, they expect it so usually make a joke of it and it kind of keeps me on-track with saying no to sweets and things even if I want one.

Lucky for me, I'm vegan and have food allergies so I always have to say no to birthday donuts, cupcakes, or cookies (which we seem to have about twice a week all year long!!) . I'm sure that doesn't help, but maybe you can pretend to have an allergy and convince yourself that it's real so you physically CAN'T eat what people are sharing.

    Beer....?
    Get me job there please?

Seriously though, I'm gluten free so it's pretty easy for me to say no thanks. How about saying that you had a big breakfast so you're full?

It usually comes down to good planning, adhering to your plan, and not wanting to have to log extra bites of things because your diary is already set for the day.

I wish I could drink beer at work. :drinker:

I too work with people who are always bringing treats. I always have my healthy snacks at my desk. I also find that if I chew gum it helps me not put anything else in my mouth. I have all flavors of gum. Also yesterday I was craving peanut m&m's. Instead of giving in and buying some, I ate my grapes. It helped with the craving for something sweet.

I am there with you all too. Yes we need to suck it up. My office has a filled to the brim candy jar and it is empty by mid afternoon.
I have told people I am trying a healthy way and they still offer me food.
I have tried my best to only have the goodies if they are truely homemade from scratch, it's worth it then.
