Anyone here have acid reflux and have to manage it with diet? What works for me during episodes is a bland and starchy nightmare of a diet...saltines...rice...Chicken soup...sweet taters and yams...very small amounts of protein. I have to stay away from fibrous veggies and most fruit. Obviously this makes things very skewed and unbalanced. I'm usually starving because I'm not getting my needs met but being in so much pain I cant really care. If anyone has experience with this and could share what's worked for them..id be greatful!

I have a hiatus hernia and chronic reflux which I have to manage with medication and diet. I've had this a long time so I have done a lot of research, both reading and through trial and error. Oats are supposed to be very good at soaking up the stomach acid. I find that it's more a case of what needs to be avoided. I will get problems if I eat anything spicy, drink alcohol, eat citrus or berry fruits, acidic veg/salad like tomatoes, nuts and seeds, peppermint, chewing gum etc. If I eat too much all at once it can be a problem.

Other things you can do are make sure that your last meal/drink was a few hours before bedtime. Raise the head of your bed a couple of inches (I use 2 old phone books stuck under the legs of my bed), try not to bend at the waist after you've eaten, try not to wear clothes that are too tight.

There are so many things you can do, I still need meds to control mine but a lot of people keep control just by diet and lifestyle changes. However, I feel it is important to say that if reflux becomes chronic it can cause long-term problems so if you can't get a handle on it through diet etc then you will probably have to think about seeing a Dr, if for nothing else then just to see what is causing it ;)

    Hope that helps!

I learner the hard way that I can do nuts anymore. I'm going to a GI specialist to try to get a handle on things. I don't have a chronic problem but when it flares up its pretty bad. Thanks for your feedback!
