Wife Swap and Trading Spouses

I like watching these shows, but at the same time I get annoyed. They put some of the seemingly worst people on them. Any thoughts, and would you ever participate in one?

They put the worst people on all reality shows. It's done on purpose to get you to watch.

I'll admit that I get sucked into these ridiculous reality shows. But I would NEVER participate in one.

Once in a while some things change for the good for some of those families. I remember there was this goth family that switches with this super religious family, and the religious family mother kept encouraging the father to spend more time with his son, so he did and ended up completing a building project with him, the father realized how much it meant to his son and enjoyed it so much that he cried, it was the sweetest thing...once in a while on that show some of the family members have an wake-up moment that changes things for the better :)
Would never participate in such a show though :P

I used to watch Wife Swap all the time. I wouldn't participate in it. Do you remember the guy who said he saw a UFO? He made cnn news and he got his son to lie. He was on wife swap twice.

Hey your not supposed to talk about the club! didnt you read the manual?
  • I'd gladly participate in one. Give me one of those woman abusing worthless pieces of work. It'd be like a boot camp up in that house.

I know someone on- line who was on one of those shows. She'd had cancer and this was a way to pay off their bills. She came off looking sensible and loving. The mom she switched places with was nuts.

My stepmom just eats up all the drivel that gets aired on TLC, so I'll be in the middle of a How It's Made marathon, and suddenly the channel switches to some inscrutable horse**** involving two effed-up families whoring out their eccentricities for the fleeting glory of being Reality TV Famous. I know they purposefully choose the most screwed up people they can find, match them with polar opposites, and then either create conflict or get creative in the editing booth, but reality TV just gives me a headache. I get that watching these human train wrecks makes us normal folks feel better about our own lives, but I can't be the only one for whom these shows transcend the label of mere spectacle and become uncanny and disturbing on a very deep level. Because the people who feature on those shows are now the high water mark of American culture. And that troubles me.
