I am new to this site (a week into this). I love it, but I have one question that maybe y'all can help me with. My daily goal for caloric burning is 676, and the site gives me credit for the 175 I burned while cycling (that number being the calories burned according to the cycle, not this website), but not for the weight training or ab work. Do I need to boost up my cardio? Should I hit the elpitical then weight train then hit the cycles? Thanks in advance for the help!!

I'm fairly new to MFP too - the site is fairly intutive but it does take a while to get used to where things are.

On the Exercise page there is a section for the Cardio, and then there's a section for Strength Training- that's wherer you're weight training should go. (And the ab work I would think.)

"They" say that interval cardio training is better for weight loss, so I think your idea of doing ellyptical/weight training/cycle is a good one. I split it up like that too and do bike/weights/treadmill.

MFP doesn't give you calories back for strength training, just cardio.
  • Oh thank you so much!
  • I am not really worried about the calories back, I just want to make sure I am hitting the targets set out for me.

I would make exercise goals based on you actual current fitness level, not the number the website picked for you. If you try to hit some arbitrary number you may burn out or injure yourself.

It does if you enter it right. You make two separate entries - your sets/reps/weight under "Strength Training", then go into the "Cardiovascular" section and enter it under the pre-set entry of "Strength Training (weight lifting, weight training)". If you want credit for the time spent but don't care about the calories burned (which probably won't be terribly accurate anyway), just manually change the calorie entry to '0'.
  • That's great! :) The app wants to give 360 calories burned for 35 minutes of moderate cycling, which I know isn't accurate. I was thinking maybe I was going crazy, then I realized you can adjust the calories burned.
