What is the difference Meal replacement/Protien shakes

Been reading quite a bit on here about Meal replacement shakes and Protien shakes, but still am not too sure on the difference, is it that the protien shakes generally are what they say on the tin, in that they are high in protien, but low in calories. Whereas a meal replacement shake is a more ballanced alternative?
I experimented with doing my own shake, mainly because all I kept seeing was shakes made with whey powder, protien powder, oatmeal and the like. But here in the UK the protien powder is pretty expensive, and I haven't really seen oatmeal (maybe I haven't looked hard enough!)
I have come up with this;
1/2 pot 75g Natural low fat yogurt
200ml semi skimmed milk
4 heaped teaspoons chopped porridge oats (Using a mini chopper gets it to a lovely powder)
3 chopped dried strawberries
1 medium banana
2 heaped teaspoons of peanut butter
Blend the whole lot in a blender for around a minute or so - I used a hand blender - and then you are ready to enjoy.
It is very sweet tasting, but pretty enjoyable really, and the count of calories et al is;
Calories - 497
Carbs - 91
Fat - 5
Protien - 24
Sat Fat - 1
Sugar - 33
So the question is - Is it a protien shake or a meal replacement shake??

A protein shake is generally just a shake made out of whey, soy, etc. and is pretty much just protein and flavoring. A meal replacement shake adds carbs and fat to the protein (usually cheap and low quality), and some add vitamins.
You've got the right idea, making your own meal replacement shake is more cost effective than a meal replacement shake and probably tastier. Personally, I would start with protein powder as the base to make it higher in protein, but whatever fits your diet is fine.0 -
Thanks for that, glad to know I am on the right track, I suppose if you are only using a couple of teaspoons of protien powder at a time then the £18 cost of a large tub, works out pretty cheap in the end! I'll give it a go, thanks again :happy:0
