Portion Control

When the MFP Food log list something as 1 cup, roughly what size cup are you using? I find it quite ambiguous, I've been using a regular tea cup but I think the sizing is off - one cup of cereal for example isn't that much, but one cup of rice (measured before cooking) - woah thats a huge amount for one person!!!

Just wondered seeing as my portion control seems to be an area I fall down.

when they say a cup, they mean an actual measured cup, or 8 fluid ounces. I.E. a measuring cup.

I use a standard dry measuring cup. As for rice, I believe you are supposed to measure your serving after its cooked since rice doubles in size.

One good tip to keep in mind when it comes to portion size- if it seems like too much, it probably is. If it seems like not enough...then that's probably about right.

Lol, ok now I feel like an idiot! Didn't even know there was such a thing as a measuring cup.!!!

Will have to go find me one of those methinks. I have measuring jugs for liquid which I can use in the meantime, so 8oz right??? Not 12??? And when it comes to rice (which I love) only do half a cup because it doubles in size and so will be one cup when cooked.

    Cheers chaps x
  • Hope this helps a bit...

    Dry Measuring Equivalents
    1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons = 15 ml
    1/8 cup = 2 tablespoons = 30 ml
    1/4 cup = 4 tablespoons = 50 ml
    1/3 cup = 5-1/3 tablespoons = 75 ml
    1/2 cup = 8 tablespoons = 125 ml
    2/3 cup = 10-2/3 tablespoons = 150 ml
    3/4 cup = 12 tablespoons = 175 ml
    1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 250 ml

    Liquid Measuring Equivalents
    1 cup = 8 fluid ounces = 1/2 pint
    2 cups = 16 fluid ounces = 1 pint = 1/2 quart
    4 cups = 32 fluid ounces = 2 pints = 1 quart
    8 cups = 64 fluid ounces = 4 pints = 2 quarts

better to measure after it's cooked for rice, as all rice absorbs differently.

Lol, no I'm not much a baker. I'm not a fan of sweets, and all the savoury stuff I make uses 'kate measurements'!!!
