...I could have a pie.

No, seriously. I gave up carbs. My husband and I are tired of being overweight so we decided to follow in my son's footsteps and try out the Atkins diet. I only need to lose 15 lbs, but my husband needs to lose around 70. We can only have 20 grams of carbs per day. It's been tough. We've sorta been on it a week. We did cheat some while we were on vacation this weekend (just the last two days) and now we're back on it.

My son was 275 and lost 45 lbs on it since April.

If anyone has any experience with this diet let me know. I know this isn't the place for that kind of diet, but it's helping me keep track of what I eat with the food diary and stuff.

There are a few of us here on the Atkins. The counters aren't really geared to us but the community is awesome.

ummmmmm..... how old are you? you look way too young to have a SON!!!!!
  • losing 30lbs in 4 months is totally doable while eating carbs in the right portion sizes .I do not want to do anything different to lose the weight than what I am going to do to maintain my weight and no carb/low carb is not a lifestyle I can do forever so no thanks

but whatever works for you is what you should do :flowerforyou:
  • I also tried Atkins, but found it did not work as well for me (a woman) as it does for men. I am nearly carb-free, though....no breads (a gluten-free diet). I eat small portions of sweet potato to keep my energy level up (no more than 6oz. per day). Going totally carb-free is really tricky, and did not work for my body, though I still am very low carbs and sugar. Now, I have the energy that is so important to my exercise regimen. To me, Atkins is a short-term solution (mostly for men), but not a healthy long-term lifestyle for me personally. Though I do not follow any specific titled diet, I would say mine is more the Zone Diet.

Well, thank you! But I am 37. My oldest is going to be 20 in a month! My youngest is 12.

I must admit I am not sticking to the 20 grams or less a day regime! But today I did only have 23 net carbs.

I think this site works best without thinking of diets. I believe it's better to to make changes in habits and life style that you are going to keep up for the rest of your life. Diets suggest an end, changing habits is forever.

Add me to your friends if you like. Where all going in the same direction.

I've never tried Atkins, but just from knowing the people who have done it, it's not for everyone. A guy I work with lost a ton of weight on it and kept it off because he doesn't get carb cravings. A woman I know stuck with it for a month and then got completely derailed because she missed eating foods she loved too much.

I know you want to do a plan with your husband (it makes the cooking so much easier!), but see how it goes and if you want your pie too much, maybe try the more traditional MFP approach so you don't have to omit the things you enjoy =) You'll definitely still lose weight!

oh I have a recipe for you, take 8 oz cream cheese(softened), one large package pudding mix( Vanilla gives you the closest taste to cheesecake, but feel free to use what ever flavor you like) Add 8 oz Heavy Cream whip till thickened, pour into individual cups, small bowls or pyrex dish. Chill until set...enjoy...sure the heavy cream has fat but on Adkins diet fat is approved.

I agree with her. Try Atkins for a while cuz for some people it really works but if you are finding out its not working for you, I've been on the traditional count the calories method (I'm doing 1,200 which is pretty low but my job is very very sedentary so don't shoot me MFP!) and I've lost 12 lb in 3 weeks. That way is not quite as restrictive as some plans. .

That sounds great! I definitely will try it.

  • Meh. Atkins fatkins.

Done every diet known to man. The only one I succeeded on is eating in moderation and moving my *kitten*. Simple calories in vs calories out. I eat pizza and chazeburgers and CAKE. You don't have to adhere to a deprivation diet to lose weight. I can't live a life without cake. That's no life to live.
  • Sounds like atkins is not for you. It's ok. It's not for most people.

    .......Iwas little bit taller,
    I wish I was a baller
I wish I had a girl wholooked good
    I would call her
    I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat
    and a '64 Impala
  • I was on the Atkins diet a number of years ago and lost about 4 stones (12lbs in the first fortnight) but I found it wasnt a diet I could stick to. I gained the weight back and then some.

It's great if you can cope without many carbs, unfortunately I can't.

I wish you all the best

if I may, I would like to share my own experience with you. On Jan 2nd of this year (2012) after lots of eating and drinking over the holidays, I literally snapped my belt while trying to tighten it around my belt. Once on the scale, I realized that I had put 273 lbs on my 59 year old, 5'8" male frame. I visited a few web sites to find out what my daily calorie intake should be to reach my goal of 185 lbs and that's when I found "my fitness pal" site. It has been incredibly "heaven sent" as not only can I keep track of the calories, but also the proper mix of foods necessary to maintain the proper nutrition. My secret has been, sticking with the plan (mostly, a little bit of cheating now and then just to fool the body), exercise (VERY IMPORTANT, I'm lucky in that I golf and started walking rather than ride a cart) and drinking lots and lots of water! This not only washes away fatty residues but also abates the appetite. I'm excited to report that my weight-in this morning (Aug. 16th) was 198.2 lbs.

Wow! 78 lbs?? Good job! I could probably do just as you, but like I said I'm trying to stick with this for my husband's sake because he wants to do Atkins. And him actually wanting to diet (and give up pop---for real??? Shocker!) I want to do whatever I can to encourage it and help promote it.

My husband lost 50 pounds last year, just by starting to exercise (which he hasn't done since college) and cutting out soda. Now, he's back on soda and has gained it all back, it really does add up.

It's good of you to support him for awhile on Atkins, it could be worse :)
