Seriously, does anyone else do this?

I don't eat out much (I'm picky and hate eating as entertainment) but one time, I ordered cajun chicken. It must have been end of lunch shift and they had left overs but they brought me TWO halves of a chicken! (I can't eat much more than 1/4)I had a tupperware bowl in my work bag so i wrapped the spare chicken up and took it home for my SO.

Now - when I (rarely) eat out i take a tupperware bowl with me and put half my meal in it before I start eating. (I'm quite discreet about it) That way I don't feel bad about leaving most of it behind when I've paid for it. I know you can get doggy bags but not all restaurants to do it and I prefer it out of the way before I start eating (and it gets messy). I've even done this with a cheese board and grapes! Just thought I'd share.

(oh, and has anyone tried asking for smaller portions at a restaurant , only to be looked at like a freak and told they don't do that?)

Never tried this... I usually just get a to go box... but I love the idea of halving it in the first place! Thanks!

haha I've taken food away with me, but have also gotten that "are you crazy!?" look when I've asked for an entree sized main

the only place this isn't okay is at a buffet. if you paid for a dish of food, it's yours to do with as you wish.

usually when I go out, I don't eat everything. I nevvverr eat the fries. Usually I have chick strips so I just eat those and leave the rest. But where I live pretty much everywhere lets you take the rest home, so I've never thought about doing it myself!

I guess that is one way to handle portion control. I give my leftovers to the homeless. Non-refrigerated commercially prepared food... doesn't sound appealing.

You can ask them to pack half of the entree before they bring it out to you. Some places do this. That way, you get your doggie bag and don't have to worry about it.

I like to order off senior menus because the portions are smaller. (I'm no senior, but I ask nicely and usually they accomodate me.) Some kids menus have real food - not just chicken nuggets and applesauce, but small portions of adult menu items - and I've ordered from those too. Sometimes a restaurant will let you order a half portion of a regular menu item (make sure they don't charge you full price, otherwise you might as well order the full portion and take the leftovers home.)
  • In South Africa, its quite common to ask for the remainder of your food as a 'doggy bag'– most of the time if you haven't finished your plate the waiter will ask you if you'd like it to go. In terms of tupperware, though, that's a new one, but as long as it doesn't phase you I say go for it!
