Ive beed on the depo provera shot since i was 16 (im 22 now) with no negative side effects. my obgyn hit a panic button over bone density (depo can inhibit your ability to absorb calcium) and put me on ortho tri cyclin lo. I gained weight, got acne, and was damnnear bipolar in a month. so we got on lowloestrin. same deal, add hair loss and severe cramps. i got back on depo, lost the weight and zits, and am emotionally balanced. My obgym is still screeching the horrors of depo, and i have to deal with a bone densiyy scan every 6 months, which gets expensive fast. ive condistently showed less than a 0.00001% change in density. im getting annoyed, bevause she wants me back on ortho tri cyclin lo. i like the shot, because theres no risk of an "oopsy did i take my pill?" or me getting nauseated, throwing up and having to take 2 in a day so i dont risk getting pregnant. Have any of you had drs like this and how did you deal with it? id just go somewhere else but shes really the only dr. atound my area for women.

  • Can't a primary care doctor administer BC to you? You don't have to see an ob-gyn. Find a new doctor if you feel the benefits outweigh the risks.

My primary doc prescibes my BC.

    Never had an issue.
But I have a hard time taking this seriously with the SN "troll" lol

It's your birth control choice. Bu,t I can't say I doubt your doctor's concerns about bone density and other matters relating to depo. However, it's what you want to use, so stick to your guns.

An alternative to depo is the nuvaring too...just a suggestion. I've been on depo, various pills, mirena and nuvaring...depo was the worst for me, personally.

I used to hate the shot. Now I have a Mirena. I absolutely love it. I had to pay a $40 copay and its good for 5 years.
Nothing beats 5 years of BC for $40...and I stopped getting my period 8 months after getting it, which is sooo nice.
