Hey everyone,

First off thanks for the wealth of support and knowledge you guys ROCK!

So roommate and I were out running errands yesterday too close to suppertime and my stomach was in knots. I had a light snack an hour and a half earlier but wasn't enough to tie me over. It was Whopper Wednesday and we decided what the hell it's been almost 4 weeks since we started this journey and aside from some multigrain crust veggie pizza we have't had any fast food.

I got a Whopper with cheese and medium fries with a water. I was surprised by a few things, though I ate slow I demolished the entire meal and also .. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought. I tried to keep down the guilt by telling myself its been almost 4 weeks and I was only over my calories by 372 but the fat was over by 38!! Then within a half hour I am feeling bloated and disgusting and throughout the night. (Total of 3 antacids)

But here's where I feel I have made progress and want your opinion:

- I chose water over pop. HUGE step as I used to drink around a litre a day. I did have ONE sip of my roomates coke though.

- I ate slow despite wanting to plow through it in 5 seconds to ensure I knew when I was full

- I'm also thinking my body has changed as I used to eat this garbage 2-3 times a week and didn't have the digestive issues that I had last night. Good sign my body has adjusted to a better lifestyle?

- I didn't hide my shame and recorded my meal soon after I ate it therefore admitting my blunder

Thanks for the opinion's guys. I know Burger King wasn't the best choice and I could have had a better option like a grilled chicken burger no mayo or something I do realize this but in spite of that any suggestions/opinions? I'm new at this

Meg

  • i think what you've said there is really great.

The way you felt afterwards and the fact that you were able to write all those feelings/thoughts down shows that you are thinking in a new way. Don't feel bad about it! It's happened and there's no point regretting it - you obviously learned from what you did. I think it's okay to have those "treats" now and again because this is life and you have to live it!

Maybe next time you go you will remember how you felt after the Whopper and pick something else? I know that when I have take-out pizza, it doesn't fill me up like I think it will and I wonder "would I have been happier cooking something for myself?" The answer, well maybe I would feel better and not force myself to work out the next day ;p but then again, hell, i enjoyed the pizza!

so don't stress. you certainly don't sound new to this :)

    Hi Meg!

First of all, you could eat Burger King regularly and lose weight just fine provided you remain in a calorie deficit.

You might not want to eat it every day for other reasons, but suffice it to say that your decision to eat fast food is:

    a) Totally fine.
    b) Not going to hurt your progress provided that your total daily intake is somewhat reasonable.
    c) Not anything you should ever feel guilty about

I get the sense that you're reaching out to people because of guilt (I could be wrong but that's what my spidey-senses are picking up). You're a human being and if you want to have some fast food, have some fast food. It isn't going to kill you in moderation and anyone making such claims is ignoring dosage and context as usual.

If you can manage to structure your diet to allow for things like this, you WIN.

Keep your head up and keep at it.

This is great - when I screw up I am so tempted to not record it, or only record half to make it look better. I know it only cheats me, but i still do it.

    Great work!!!

^Listen to what he just said. It's all about having a calorie deficit. You CAN fit fast food, junk food, any type of food into your calorie goals. You may not want to all the time for a variety of reasons (eating more natural foods, lack of nutrients, cost, etc) but eating fast food won't affect your weight loss as long as you are at a calorie deficit. And going over your cals every once in awhile won't really set you back too much either (depending on your built in deficit of course).
Also - I want to add that fat won't make you fat. Carbs won't make you fat. Protein won't make you fat. People get fat because they are eating more calories than they are burning. So, if you go over on one of your macros, it's probably not a big deal. I regularly go over on my fat macro, and it hasn't hindered my ability to lose.
Good job making better choices for yourself! You're doing good!!

I think you are doing great! One of the things about making a lifestyle change is to be able to sometimes (once in a while, like you did) indulge yourself. Sometimes those little indulgences make the journey a little more bearable. Anyway, if you look at your progress of a span of time (like the 4 weeks you've been doing this) or even one week, one meal isn't going to completely ruin you. Plus, you learned some important things about yourself with that meal. Sometimes when I feel like a special burger (Teriyaki Burger at Carl's is my favorite), I won't get fries with it and sometimes I get the low-carb (no bun) which shaves off about 100 calories.
If we deprive ourselves of too much, I think we are setting ourselves up for failure. Sounds to me that you are on the right track! :flowerforyou:

You guys are amazing!! Thank-you for all the input and encouragement. It's true I do feel a bit guilty still even though I know I shouldn't. I feel bad for putting my body through that agony just for some temporary pleasure and also semi desperation :P

I did my walk a little faster today and for some reason feeling like I should be drinking lots. I don't know if there's any truth in this but I feel like I ate a TON of sodium yesterday and am trying to help flush it out I guess. Don't worry not going over board just had a few extra cups of water.

Thanks again everyone and keep posting if you have anything to say or PM me :)

I agree with sidesteele, guilt is never a good thing. Don't think about the guilt but maybe think about how it made your body feel. Too many people hate on fast food(like people suing McDonalds for getting fat) but it's ultimately up to us to take care of our bodies. Something that a lot of people don't know is that you can also order a whopper without the bun and they will serve it to you in a little bowl and you can just eat it with a fork and it's still quite tasty but removes loads of calories and carbs. Eliminate the mayo too, you don't miss it. You can go to their website and "build a burger" how you want it if you want to look at the calories and whanot. A lot of fast food restaraunts have this and you can do "protein style" anywhere and they'll also just wrap the burger in lettuce. It still tastes great. If there is a Carl's Jr near you try the turkey burger sans mayo done protein style. It's only 179 calories and has a lot of protein from the turkey and I swear you'll get hooked on it, it's so good! Also...if you're on the run it's just as fast as a whopper. The turkey burger's protein fills you and you don't even want fries as well.

I think you're making good progress. Don't get overwhelmed and take it day by day you'll be awesome!
