Rum is ruining my diet!

I have been working out, and attempting to control my eating habits. The one thing that keeps tripping me up is my alcohol consumption. I am far from being an alcoholic, but I get bored with diet sodas and water. At the end of the day, it's like my rum and diet soda is my treat. But! The calories in even Bacardi Zero are killing my calorie consumption.
Are there any suggestions to help me stick to just a few drinks on the weekend instead of a drink or two a night?

I'd say don't drink the alcohol, but that would defeat what your going for. Alcohol has a lot of calories in it and they add up fast.
I would use a drink as a treat, but not on a daily basis...not if you want to make a difference in the relation of alcohol calories to your weight. I am talking cutting back to 1-2 a week. Then it truly is a treat, cause having one everyday....that's a habit.0 -
eventually you will begin to realize its not that great...iu learned that cause I loved my whiskey and beer but i tapered off with the drining mainly cause I knew it was doping me no good to drink a 6 pack a nite and i lost wt and began to feel crappy afterwards I keep my drinks to 3 or under a week anymore and I am feeling sick....0

That's been my problem in the past as well!! It doesn't help that my husband can sit there and relax with a few drinks and I'm looking for things to distract myself and relax my mind.
Thanks though!0 -
Thanks Bunny! i'll try that!0

WELL I DONT HAVE ANY GOOD ADVISE...BUT I AM IN THE SAME BOAT....KINDA......I DONT DRINK EVERYDAY BUT ONCE A WEEK WE HAVE A WORK GET TOGETHER AND I DRINK BACARDI THERE WITH SIERRA MIST FREE.....MY ONLY QUESTION IS ON THIS SITE IT SAYS A SERVING IS A GLASS OF BARCARDI WHAT IS THE EQUAL TO.......I MEAN I KNOW ITS NOT A WHOLE GLASS BUT THAT IS WHAT THE SERVING SIZE SAYS.......DOES ANYONE KNOW......SO I DONT END UP DRINKING LIKE 5 TIMES MORE THAN I SHOULD........THANKS..........0

Also, try other relaxation methods. Listen to music, veg with the TV, read, meditate (don't laugh it works), go for a walk (even if you've already worked out), experiment with other types of drinks (smothies, teas, coffees, etc).0

A serving is 1floz. I found out that it's 68 calories to every fluid ounce. So I went home and measured....basically when you're at the bar you're getting 3x that amount.
Another thing I found out...one 6oz glass of wine will slow your metabolism by 75%. Hence my need for an alternative!!0 -
THANKS.........I GUESS DRINKING IS JUST NOT A OPTION FOR ANY OF US.......HAHA.....WELL GOOD LUCK LET ME KNOW IF YOU FIND ANYTHING WAS ARE ALLOWED TO DRINK........I DONT DO IT VERY OFTEN BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THAT EVEN ONCE IN A WHILE IT WONT TRIPLE MY CALORIE INTAKE.........0

It's insane, I agree....
I guess my biggest problem is that both my husband and I grew up in families where grownups would come home and have a drink every night. It's ingrained....and trying to break that cycle is going to take a LOT of work.
YOU GUYS ARE ALL AWESOME! Thank you for all the replies!0 -
i dont drink (and never had) so i went on the food database and looked up beer, and am FLOORED by how many calories it is to have just a couple, let alone a six pack...now i understand the freshman 15!!0

My drink of choice is Southern Comfort and 7-up. Its so sweet it will make your teeth rot. DELICIOUS.
I've never even added up the calories in one, because it would seriously depress me.
I'm crazy about caffeine. When I first met my husband I was drinkin 60+ oz. of coffee a day. I've cut back completely. I've now swtiched to tea, which is good because I don't use any cream in it, so fewer calories. And I have a 20 oz. tea in the morning.
If someone tried to convince me to stop drinking caffenated beverages completely I'd tell them to jump off a cliff. Which is how it sounds like you feel too.
When I was still drinking coffee, I just factored it in ahead of time by planning my meals. And if I knew I wasn't working out that day, no coffee. It was my punishment for not working out. And it was kinda fun to watch the calories burnt on my HRM... I'd sit and think, "Sweet, there is my Venti Skinny Vanilla Latte from Starbucks!"0 -
I have a problem with beer on the weekends..... :drinker: ...but I think it's slowing me down.... Oh the decisions we must make. I probably won't cut it out completely and I don't think you should have to either. Just try to control yourself.. like do it slowly. Have a few less the first week, then a few less the second week...try to make it a weekend thing and then eventually maybe you will only have one for celebrations or special treats! I like to think that will work for me but who knows!!!! :grumble: Good luck!I end up thinking, Oh its the weekend!0

Thank you Jenna! I'm thinking that I will do just that. Start tonight by making the two drinks I have smaller. And in a few night have just one small drink....so on and so forth. I figure in a few weeks, with a little help, I can stick to it and help cuto ur grocery bill down! Rum and coke is not the poor-newly-weds drink, that's for sure (though I am just that!!)

The big thing to remember, no one can MAKE you do anything here. We can only offer suggestions and support, cause obviously it was bothering you and others have the same struggle.
Alcohol consumption is a choice. Whereas I don't, doesn't mean I think no one should or that anyone is doing things wrong. However, if you are consuming it awareness is important. Man, that's why I don't get some of my favorite foods/drinks cause I am aware of what it adds up to.
Anyway, good luck....starting small is a good step.0
