Exercise on empty stomach / carb deprived state

So, Team GB Cycling had a fantastic Olympics, winning lots of gold medals and, more satisfyingly, winding up the French in the process.
On BBC Radio Four one morning a member of the support team was asked what tip he would give the general public in order for them to improve their fitness. He answered by saying we should occasionally exercise on an empty stomach in order to improve the efficiency of our body's ability to convert fat to energy. He said the team GB cycle team each had one carb deprived training session per week.
I have seen this subject discussed here a lot. I notice he said they only did one session per week, not every session. He suggested the rest of us should occasionally try it, not every session.
For what it's worth. Do your own research. I thought it was interesting to hear what someone responsible for the fitness of such elite athletes had to say when asked for the one tip that would help us all.
Edited for one of the spelling mistakes.

I did my cardio for the last two days on an empty stomach. The problem I experienced was taking my pre-workout supplement with nothing in my stomach. I did not find that fun, however, I did find that eating something light like a few bites of no sugar added grapefruit pieces took a bit of the edge off of that.0

If I workout without eating first, I get very ill and throw up. Like I did today. Not a fan0

Interesting. I have thought about this, after a cycling trip where i pedaled 30 miles in a totally carb deprived state. (heat stroke, i puked up everything i ate) Even if there is no physical reason to do this, it was a good experience mentally, to know that i was capable of operating far beyond what should have been my limits. The human body is truly amazing.0

My preferred time to run is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, I'm not sure what, if any, effect that has on my ability to oxidize fatty acids however it it very important for endurance athletes to train to burn fat (we have a limited amount of glycogen in our muscles and liver but even a skinny marathon runner has, for all practical purposes, an unlimited supply of fat for fuel)0

It's not necessary, in fact it might disadvantage some.
