newbie- calorie consumption confusion

I'm seeing people on here eat more, eat less, eat back exercise calories, not eat them back. what the heck?

I have lost 5 lbs. but not sure if it's the type of food consummed, total calories, etc. I was doing 1200, but then read on here that that's not right. Now, I'm at 1500, sometimes eating back, sometimes not. I've lost 5 lbs.in 6 weeks, but have been flat for 2-3 of those weeks, or even blipped back up to starting weight.

I've checked out the TDEE and the RMR, etc. Right now I am taking 30% off TDEE. Is this the way I should continue?

It all just seems to be a mystery whether I am gaining or losing. Now that I'm back to having lost 5 from the blips, I just want to continue in a way that I know is working.

Thanks for the help!

I am 6 ft, 176 and 32 years old.

I've checked out the TDEE and the RMR, etc. Right now I am subtracting from BMR. Is this the way I should continue?
Not really, you subtract from the total energy expenditure TDEE to get your intake (food) calories.

Subtracting from BMR/RMR will put you lower than from TDEE.

You are right, I am actually taking 30% off TDEE, Not BMR. I've confused myself! (I corrected the original post)

So now I'm at 1540, still confused about eating back exercise calories.

    Thanks!
