used to eat at least 1 bar of chocolate a day - only had 2 in last week

used to snack all day as well as have meals - watched what i ate, had salads and stuff and not snacked except for a handful of grapes or something.

Don't let it get you! One week isn't enough for your body to get past the "what the h&^% is happening" stage and get comfortable with the changes - give it some more time, believe me, the effort is worth it!

Have you been logging your calories? Were you under your goal calories every day, even though you were being more careful in what you ate? You didn't say and your diary isn't open. You can certainly cut out junk and still gain weight if you're eating more calories than you're burning.

That said, it could also just be water weight. Don't give up yet. Give it another week of being good, logging your food, staying under your calorie goal and I'd be willing to bet you'll drop a couple of pounds.

I agree, you've made some awesome changes and should be proud of yourself. Don't let the stupid number on the scale make you feel bad. You've made a huge change for the better. So many things can effect the scale, I wouldn't stress about it too much. Keep up the good work and I'm sure you'll start to notice the positive changes soon. Stick with it!
  • thanks for your replies

It will take a wee while for the changes to kick in. I used to have the 2L a day habit too.

I haven't cut it out of my life completely...I already gave up a hell of a lot to start getting healthier, so I factor it in to my calorie counts. I only now have a can or half a can worth a few times a week, and yes, sad bugger I am, I do drink it out of a measuring cup.

It took me a few weeks to flush the crap out of my system, but I have noticed that my stomach is no longer distended, rock hard and bloated. Also, 'going' is far easier, more consistent and regular.

Just make sure you are being very religious about logging your calorie intakes...it's all to easy to ignore a couple maltezers or a few crisps, but they add up very fast and it can be shocking to see what their total actually is.

Keep up with your changes and you'll start seeing the results!!
Keep your goals small and work on one or two things at a time. Too much too soon can be counterproductive.

I didn't lose any weight until week 4!!! Then I lost 3lb but then it slowed down to 1/2- 11/2 a week and the odd gain. It's going so slowly but I'm resigned to it taking a while and know that it's more likely to stay off that way x

These are massive changes, you have every reason to be proud. This isn't something that happens overnight. I know it's beyond frustrating but weight loss is not linear. Sometimes it goes up, sometimes it goes down. When it goes up, it doesn't necessarily mean you've gained fat. 1 lb of fat takes roughly 3,500 calories. So, to have gained 1 lb of fat you would have to have eaten 3,500 calories over your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). That's the number of calories you need to maintain weight, so it's a number bigger than your calorie goal. If you've been meeting your calorie goal every day, then you haven't gained a pound of fat.

Lots of things can make you gain water weight - starting a new exercise programme, getting more sodium than usual, getting more carbs than usual, hormonal fluctuations...

So, swear at the scale, kick it a bit, and then forget about it. Keep doing what you're doing, and be proud of the changes you've made. Weight loss is not easy, but you've taken the first difficult step. In the meantime, taking measurements and taking photos of what you look like now - those will help keep you motivated along the way when you aren't seeing the movement on the scale.

    it's only been a week.

take your measurements, stay away from the scale, and do it faithfully for 6 weeks.

    you'll see results.

Be sure to take your measurements too, sometimes you'll show progress there instead of the scale. So many factors affect the scale, especially water retention. Don't give up!!

It takes time, don't give up. Your body is probably like WTF are you doing to me??? And holding onto every ounce you put into it right now. I highly recommend getting on www.nerdfitness.com and reading some of the blog posts and even sign up for his emails. I LOVE that site and have found major inspiration to keep going when I don't want to and don't see any results.

I didn't lose weight after the first week - it was disappointing. But after 3 weeks the weight has just begun to melt off and I feel incredible with good energy - believe me, not drinking that much pop and cutting back on the chocolate bars will make you healthier even if you don't lose weight!
Keep at it - I was told to give the change 2 weeks before I tried to add or eliminate something. It was good advice. :)
