Family game (food!) night: need advice

Hi all! New here. That said, I need some advice.
Every Friday night a bunch of my family gets together for game nights (board games, trivia, card games, etc). Among our crew are two southern cooks who bring some AMAZING dessert to the party...NONE of them healthy-- even the fruit ones have a TON of sugar and butter.
I am in no way going to ask them NOT to bring them, but I have a hard time keeping away from them. I find that I am a "snacking/sneaking eater" meaning I nibble A LOT-- and most of the time without even thinking about it.
First, are there any tricks you have used to be more aware of what you eat?
Do you have any mental strategies before going in to a feast?
Anything else?
TIA!

Make sure that you're not starving when you go over - if you have dinner beforehand, make it a healthy but very filling one. The time I am most likely to overindulge is when I'm actively hungry, so I eat something good for me before I get to that point. Also, can you take something tasty that is within your plan?
If nothing else, eat lighter and very low fat the day of the party, and then limit yourself to a regulated amount of dessert. Eat it slowly, it'll feel like there's more of it.0 -
chew gum. I am a snacker too. I cant make dinner without sneaking bites of everything just automatically. If you are chewing gum you would have to take the gum out of your mouth to take a bite of something else, making you conscious of what you are doing and help you make the decision0

Ask the family to keep the desserts in the kitchen, so anyone who wants a serving can go get it there. And then put your food on a small plate - allow yourself to go into the kitchen once to get a dessert and that's it.0

Bring cucumbers (thinly sliced and cold, so they are crunchy and good, lighty salted) and hummus?
Bring really good chewing gum?
Good luck.0 -
Hey everyone! Thanks for all the tips. I immediately started chewing more gum ...That on'e gonna help at night while I cook. I only went in for one plate of munchies...I also made lots of veggies that I brought for all to munch on.0

take your own snack in your pocket and drink tons, I mean tons of water so you are too full to eat.
here is another idea.......eat a light breakfast and salad only for lunch so that you can enjoy the night and don't feel bad. Only 1 night of week eatting like that is not going to kill you if you prepare during the day and oh yeah make sure to do your eliptical before you go.0 -
also after i do indulge in my treat and chart it, I have a mental conversation with myself (as I tend to binge on sweets) It goes something like this....Are u hungry? No. Then why do u want to eat more? It tastes good. Yes it does but u already had some and unless u are actually hungry you do not need more do u? No No I do not!0
